I use both, but I prefer slate
Trapping is easy you say? You try getting your target animal to step in a 3 inch area of its whole territory.

And for the most part your better off not doing much calling. A few calls will let that bird know where you are. And If He's hened up good luck.

On occasion, I have called in henned up and hung up birds if there are more than one gobbler in the group. I use a pair of purr calls, a mouth call to cut with and a gobble tube. This would be a mock turkey fight. I use it as a last resort and it has worked. With a purr call in each hand, I purr loudly and cut with the mouth call. This is all done LOUD. once in a little bit drop one of the purr calls and throw in a couple of jakey type gobbles. Do this for several minutes NON STOP. If it's going to work, The gobblers will be having fits. Sometimes, they break and run right to you and I do mean run. Remember, this is a turkey fight. It's loud! And, It works at times when nothing else is going to. If the turkeys are responding you might stay quiet for a minute and start right back at it again. Obviously, One should use extreme caution when using any gobble tube. BE SAFE!

Woodhaven makes very good calls. As for slate or glass? I get my calls out about a month in advance and work them as they lay on my workbench. I have many strikers and calls. I have slate, glass and aluminum. In my experience slate is very good and forgiving, hard to get bad sounds, glass is a nice pitch but I have found from time to time I can get some bad sounds especially if it or the striker needs roughed up. The aluminum is another nice pitch but I think the hardest to master. In the woods I use my slate the most (of my pot calls) The Woodhaven Legend like mentioned is a great glass call.

Depends on the locations and birds. When I hunted in Penn Yan, NY, they would respond to a slate. Mouth calls only worked on the roost. Where I'm at now glass seems to be best. Or a push pin box call. I carry all. Sometimes one gets response , other times they want something different.

I have a huge variety of calls, but I have called every turkey that I have shot, with my old Aluminator.

I use every kind of call out there at different times in different states on different birds and different species. As far as striker calls i prefer slate as it is much more subtle for working birds. I seldom use glass for anything except a locator. I am a minimal caller and have 6 Grand Slams 3 that were done in one year. The one thing I do do with striker calls is try different types of strikers till I find the ones that give the best tone. Iv'd used everything from hickory to zebra wood. I matched an old H S Strut slate with a purple heart striker once that was absolutely deadly. Hope you find what you are after and especially what works for you on your turkeys. Don't forget to learn how to build and use a wing bone call. The guys in Ozarks swear by em and I have found them to be effective.

I carry both along with several strikers. My current favorite is a Derby City. I also carry a small piece of scotch bright on a lanyard around my neck to rough up or clean strikers if needed. For close up work I like a diaphragm. I agree that a diaphragm call is best if I am the shooter for close up work. If i am calling for somebody I will go to a Lynch Jet slate call. It can be used very quietly. In close I go only to a one cluck and purr type call and only to convince the ole gobbler that everything is calm and cool....come on in.
