Always been told it's not a good idea to refill the 1 lb tanks since it becomes a safety issue due to the thin metal. I would check your regulator as I had got a faulty on my new grill last year. Replaced it and no more problems. Also if you put on a fresh 20 lb. tank, crack the valve open real slow so it doesn't mess up the regulator and it won't get a good flame. Maybe you won't have that issue with a 1 lb if that is the cause.

the key to easy filling is to upend the source tank I have refilled them for years using a simple, brass fitting. Screw fitting into 20# bottle, turn upside down, screw 1# bottle into fitting, open valve on 20# bottle, wait a few minutes for the pressure to equalize, then turn off valve and unscrew bottle. Works best if bulk bottle is warmer than 1# bottle. If you are not getting the bottles full enough, you can take a pair of needle-nose pliers and pull out the relief valve on the 1# bottle to bleed off excess pressure, leaving most of the liquid propane in the bottle. Make sure you use a heavy glove or you will experience freezer burn on your hand. It only takes a few seconds to relieve the excess pressure. Then repeat the fill process. Usually, if you bleed once and fill twice you will get them full. Try not to overfill or the relief valves may open on a hot day. Best to store them outside when not using.

I spent the whole winter in a 16X24 cabin with a heater Buddy and I used the same six 1 pound cannisters all winter, constantly refilling them every other day.

Yup, buy the attachment that others are showing you. I make some very soapy water and put one drop on the relief valve and work in back and fourth. That's just to lube it (you never want to use any type of oil or oil based product) Then freeze the 1 pound can for a few hours. It helps if the large 20 or 30 pound tank is a little warm so set it in the sun for awhile. Screw in the attachment and get the 1 pound can out of the freezer. I put 1 drop or soapy water on the filling valve screw it onto the large tank, flip the tank over and open the valve. You will hear it fill. when it done, turn off the valve, flip it back over and unscrew the 1 pound tank. DONE I always check for bubbles on relief and fill valves (with soapy water) and I never store a refilled tank in the house. Store them either outside or in a drafty shed. They can leak. Better yet, only fill what you are going to use in the very near future.

Better yet, only fill what you are going to use in the very near future. This is exactly how we do it. When done with the 1 pound tanks we bury them outside in the snow, when we get half a dozen empty we fill them. The trick is keeping the 1 pounders very cold or frozen, and inverting the 20 pound tank during refilling. It works great.

Trying to understand why everyone freezes their 1lb containers? I've never done this and they fill up way fuller than what you get at the store. Just turn the big tank upside down and in half an hour the little tank is as full as it can get.

I got one of the adapters to fill the one pounders and have used it a few times..I even see where Menards is now selling a 1lb size tanks marked refillable..If I understood the info I got with my Mr Buddy heater about using a filter for the 20lb hook up. it wasn't about the 20lb gas being dirtier, it was particules from the old style hoses for the 20lb hook up. If you have the newest style hose I guess it's not an issue??? At least that is how I took it. I have only run my Mr buddy on 1lb and I have used the refills which I always mark as refill. No issues yet. If I used the 1lbers more I might look at couple them refillable ones Menards had.

Just turn the big tank upside down and in half an hour the little tank is as full as it can get. We aren't waiting a half hour to fill a bottle. By freezing the small bottle, you are reducing the pressure so when you hook up the big bottle you will get a better fill as the pressure between the two tanks equalizes. I only "fill" a bottle for about a minute. Oftentimes, I will be filling a dozen bottles at a time and at a half hour a bottle, I wouldn't have time to make it fishing the same day!

Ok, I have 6 canisters, two going in the buddy heater, two full ones on standby and two being refilled. But I only run mine at night.
