Beavers are just starting to come out through the the ice for fresh grub here. Could’ve shot a big one the other day in one of the back channels close to the mackenzie river but all I had was my 270.

Still froze in here.Creeks should open up around the first week of May this year by the look of it.Might get 10 days trapping open water before end of season May 15. The geese are just starting to show up.Hunters will be heading out to the goose camps now to get ready.

First week after ice out here the fur is still good on about 80% of the catch. After 3 weeks if your still trapping about 80% will be shedders or dmg.Fur/pelt quality of the resource goes downhill pretty fast after ice out. If you are any good at grading and have an alternative market for finished product, you can trap hard for a couple weeks after ice out and ship the repairables to the tanner for self manufacture, and ship the good big hvy's to the auction to pay the tanning bill. Ice out here in the Rockies can be 1st week of June, sometimes even later up high. Here they are all bad the first hour after ice-out. April 18th and still not a hint of open water, looks to be at least another month, maybe more. June 1st beaver don't look very good, and in my experience by ice-out at that time only a few smaller ones appear to be anything other than hatters. I'm not disagreeing about most ice out skins being pretty good immediately after its gone, but when it's this late they are ugly.

You have a special “Castor Police “ force up there ? Fish & Game must have a lot of extra money up there.
