Son just adopted one of these. I’ve been researching traits this morning, have mixed feelings and am concerned. Any experiences or knowledge of this breed would be appreciated.

Hope he know how to work with and train an aggressive dog, I have always like their looks but would not own one unless I had a need for one

Hope he doesn’t have kids while other dogs bite they go in to destroy whatever has set them off, it’s not the fault of the dog it’s just in their breeding much like pointing birds in a bird dog or running tracks in a hound

Some of that can be handled with training but not everything and unless I had a need for such a dog I would not own one

All that being said I know people that have them and have never had a problem but it is something to keep in mind

They were breed for dog fighting and killing game and while the breed has been moving away from that and working on breeding for companionship and pet qualities in my opinion they still have a long way Togo before I would trust one

There will most likely be some that tout how good they are but when you do your research it’s not so good

Just a shot PS

I don’t know what they say nowadays but when I was looking into maybe getting one back in the late 80s I contacted the breed association and they told me if I was looking for one for a pet to not get one

I don’t know what they say nowadays but at the time I took it to hearts

Farm bureau won't issue a homeowners policy if you own one.

Thanks for the reply’s. He’s a responsible young man but I’m not good with this. So many breeds out there and he surprises me with this guy. Don’t want to ruin easter at my house today with the subject but it’s a concern . I need more options.

Should call his homeowner agent and increase his liability coverage to the max.

He would never want me on his jury.

You need to know more about the breeding lines....how were the dogs mother and father ...etc. An adoption is a crap shoot.

This is what happened to my granddaughters miniature horse stallion the other day. bull dog ripped off its genitals killing it.

Put me on the side of thinking its foolish to keep one for a pet. Plenty of breeds are a better choice for a pet. If he wants home/property protection, Walmart sells mossburg 500's for 250 bucks.

Is it a pup? If not it might be challenge depending on how it was raised.
I've had a couple of them and know many with them. They are great loyal dogs if raised right. They are very social and protective. They need to know they are on the bottom of the pack list especially if raised with kids.

There's a grey nose service dog at my kids school.

Good bloodlines along with honest breeders who take care of the animals are the way to go. A lot of these dogs are from poor quality breeders who sale them for cheap money and require nothing from the buyer. No guarantee that an animal isn't going to turn on you at some point. That being typed, I wouldn't allow your dog to establish any type of dominance over anyone in your household. These types of dogs need authoritative handlers and extensive training as any dog, but due to more of their reputation.

Once they walk on or over you, you will eventually lose that pup and it will do as it pleases if it isn't corrected and it should be done in the same manner every time and shouldn't be taken lightly. I'd also invest in an out stick or some type of break stick in the event your dog is attacked by another dog or for your dog. Always good to carry one when you are out for walks especially if you live in an area where the animal owners don't care to keep their animals fenced in or on a leash.

I've been to peoples houses for dog bites where the dog and the owners kid couldn't be in the same room with the dog because the dog didn't like the kid and the owner never corrected its behavior. I walk mine in pet stores, run around with other dogs in dog parks, no issues with aggression towards other dogs or people. It's the other way around when we go out to these places. Many can't handle their animals and a lot of times it gets their dogs in to altercations that in most cases could've been avoided had the owner invest time and training into their animals. Continuous training, correction and affection is what we give ours. Your dog will only amount to what the handler puts into it.

I cant tell the difference in the two to be honest. Dog that did that was not registered. Probably should have said pit bull looking dog.

There's little discernible difference between the two.
