Anybody know one? I can’t figure out what they are trying to accomplish. I watch them on you tube taping themselves and more often than not they are making a fool of themselves. Even most of the comments about their actions including the cursing indicate they are rude to the police officers trying to do their jobs. Do they want a lawless society or something else?

In our area we have the Indian reservation. The reservation is considered a sovereign nation apart from the rest of the country. What I don't understand is if they are a sovereign nation apart from the rest of us in the area, why are they allowed to vote in our elections? If it's allowable for them, why doesn't it work the other way too, allowing us to vote in their elections?

I also watch them on YouTube. Some of their points I like and agree with but I mostly watch for the entertainment value of them making donkeys of themselves.

I've seen them and also lots of videos of police breaking their oath to uphold the constitution during routine traffic stops.

Seems like they want all the benefits of living in society without obeying any of the rules. All the ones I've seen on YouTube came off as entitled.

Most only recognize Sheriffs and not regular LEO's.
Their reasoning is Sheriffs are elected.

I knew some posse comitatus folks a few years back. I think they were the predecessors of sovereign citizens. I got along with them. This bunch never shot anybody though I thought at one time they might. Several lost farms by refusing to pay property taxes.

Because we signed a treaty with those Amerindians recognizing their sovereign territory. The courts still enforce these treaties, but fairly to the Amerindians in our time. (I'm using "Amerindians" to avoid confusion with real Indians.)

What I don't understand is why US taxpayers pay for their medical care and houses, when they are sovereign nations.

A paralegal at my old firm was 1/2 Alaska Native, and her kids were 1/4. Her kids got free medical care, and will get it for life.

For such laws, we can thank Congress, not the courts. It's an extension of the old Great White Father approach which has left some Amerindians overly dependent on the federal government.

Yep. The medical care is also part of treaties. Hence, the Public Health Service's additional branch, the Indian Health Service.

Incidentally, Wesley Snipes tried using a sovereign citizen argument during his tax trial. Got the book thrown at him.

I thought the free medical care was enacted by Congress in later years.

I might be wrong though.

Well, the Snyder Act of 1921 formalized healthcare for Indians . But I guess provisions for healthcare go all the way back to 1787 . So , not sure.

It sounds like both are true.

My guess now is that Congress acted because some treaties provided for health care, and some didn't.

I can see that, Jim.

I'm not a fan of the whole sovereign citizen thing. Huge pains to deal with and full of bad information. They'd copyright ( or try to ) their names and attempt to sue if you used their name without their written consent. Which you always had to do as just a matter of daily duties. One group successfully , for a time , had liens placed on one of our Warden's home and cars . That got him quite a bit more time added on to his sentence.

I used to work with one. He was LEO and self proclaimed attorney. He smelled like arse and conned a few co workers into his demented scheme of not having to pay taxes because he was a sovereign nation.
He went to prison for tax evasion. Doesn't seem like any of them are all that smart.
