Here's the deal about horse racing in general. When a horse does what that one did with all of those horses running as fast as a horse can run that close together, a catastrophe will likely result. Just imagine the carnage of jockeys flying through the air and horses smashing into each other breaking legs. It ain't NASCAR. No roll cages.

None of that happened so I guess it wasn't that bad.

Throw in the muddy conditions and I'm guessing a graze more than a bump.

The complaining Jockey is a putz.

They ran more horses in the race than they normally do, which apparently made it more crowded than usual.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I see now Maximum isn't running the Preakness. I believe that would be a mistake.

Hobbie, why would you put that horse back on a track that wasn't properly acclimated to crowd noise? I wonder if Mr. West is giving Servis the boot and looking for a new trainer...And I doubt that Saez will be on a mount in the Preakness. It's too bad because Maximum is a stunning horse but because his jockey could not keep him where he needed to be he Dqed. You wonder if a jockey like Mike Smith could have breezed him home...

My guess is that "War of Will" was going to win while "Maximum Security" and "Long Range Toddy" were going to fight for Place and Show, had Saez held him on the rail...

I just read the why and they state that the horse "jumped a puddle" which took him out of his lane. That a horse was cruising along to where he could "jump a puddle" tells me he still had another gear.

lol

looked to me like war of will was hitting maximum on right side with front legs prior to the drift. one would think the animal would drift left way from the other horse. maybe the horse desire to stay in front would block like that..
i dont think the jockey had anything to do with it.. no matter maximum was the strongest horse and should have been given the win.

Hobbie, Donna Brothers interviewed Saez (on horseback as she does) immediately after the race, (did you watch the race?) and Saez (the jockey on MS) told her "he got away from me on the last turn because of the crowd noise, but I brought him right back." No talk of any puddle, no coaching by owners and trainers as to what to say, his words right after the race while cooling the horse down walking back to the finish. Saez knew he had messed up coming off the rail. He said his horse was a "baby" about the noise...

Your first photo in the article has MS already off the rail already interfering. The second photo is of an almost catastrophe. The next photo would be of MS going back to the rail and squeezing "By My Standards". It's safe to say Saez was all over the place and he knew it...Find the interview with Donna and you can hear him say it.

Yes the jockey knew it ... He was trying to make an excuse for what was going to come.

They're gonna have to designate lanes and stagger the start. It's an open track...leading horse should be able to go wherever he wants. The horses behind him just need to be faster.

not sure I'm seeing the controversy. The "stage"/size of the event doesn't preclude the rules from being followed. It was a pretty easy call and if you're around racing - you see it made every day on tracks across the continent.

-- It seems all of Greece knows what is the right thing to do, but it is only the Spartans that do anything about it. --

To avoid some of the issues they could do gnomic testing on all the horses and use a computer to factor in the genetic strengths, weaknesses and also used computerized info regarding environmental factors, like weather, trainer histories, jockey histories etc. and run a phantom race and eliminate all the cost, hype etc. It would resolve all the potential and real subjective safety issues etc and it would not be anymore political than it already is in my opinion.
