Our range finally opened up again last week. So I decided to way one week for the dust to settle and take the 458 SOCOM for it first outing. I loaded up some 300 grain Sierra pro hunter over some IMR4198 just to test function after I had to finagle some with the ejector to get it to work on the bench. So now it was time to try it with powder power. I set up a target at 25 yards to see where the sights are and had at it. After 3 rounds I had the red dot where it needed to be and adjusted the backup sights to have the tot sit on the front post. Moved the target out to 50 and got a clover leaf group. The red dot covered the center of the target spot on. She has a it of a kick to her but its fun to shoot. Maybe I should not have gone the light weight route for this build, but I did. So now I have a close range hog hammer and venison getter I think. I may try some loads a little hotter then this to see where the groups go. But this should be plenty of punch for what I want the rifle to do.

If you can test over a chrono that would be the best when working towards hotter loads. Remember this round is way over pressure before you see any pressure signs. But you knew that im sure. Good luck, sounds yours is more accurate than mine is. Tromix>BCA lol

As there is only very sparse data out there that is actually verified. I had to do this one by " ear " Burn rate chart in hand and bullet style etc. I have to get a chronological at some point to find out what is really going on. All I know right now is that it makes 1 gallon water jugs disappear and its under 2 MOA at a100 yards. The magnum pistol primers I use have lost their rounded edge a bit. Other then that no pressure signs. So far I am happy with it. All being almost boring a far as trying out loads and that sort of thing goes. Once I had the ejector bit figured out and remedied with the use on a pin chuck in my lathe and a small file. I am using standard 20 round magazine and get 6 rounds into it with no feeding issues and no modifications to the mags. If the laws ever change, this one would be a candidate to build a can for and some heavy sub sonic rounds

I really dont think its that much overkill for a deer. It actually has less muzzle energy than a 308. It is great for close range stuff in tight cover but really wont cause any more damage than say a 50 cal muzzle loader shooting sabots with a decent charge. The benefits come with it fitting in an AR platform for follow up shots on multiple critters like shooting hogs. And its cool.

I think Possum Man has got the gist of it. The 300 grain 458 hollow point does arrive somewhat more flat footed than a 30 cal rifle bullet for sure and has a good thump to it. But for me it is certainly a sub 100 yard cartridge but inside those 100 yards I think it will ruin the day of any critter that gets hit by it.

What bullets are you using in yours ? I am playing with the idea of putting some sort of low powered scope on it ..... 2 to 6 x or along those lines. To my surprise it is more accurate than I would have thought and the red dot can't utilize that accuracy as the dot at 100 yards is about the size of one of Jupiters moons. But I don't want it to be slow in getting the target in sight .... I am not sure what to do right now.
