Every spinal surgery is serious. As soon as possible after surgery get up and walk because the body will start healing sooner and faster. Best wishes.

Had it done 10 years ago, the best thing that could have been done. The previous ten years was miserable and pure suffering. When I woke up in recovery I knew I was a changed person for the better. There was no more pain and that wasn't from being under. My surgery lasted 7.5 hours and they had me up and walking two hours after. It wasn't very dignified wearing that split hospital gown but I did it. The following weeks they wanted me walking two miles a day, I used a cane and did an old man shuffle, but that soon passed. My Doc. said the worse thing to do is to sit on the couch and not be active. Those are the horror stories you hear about.
The drawback - I was a heavy equipment mine mechanic and I never went back to that line of work. I'm a liability according to company policies, and I was given a 40 lb weight limit. The physicals I use to take had you lifting 100 lbs from the floor to above your chest.
I'm very careful about what I lift and how I do it as I was given a second chance at a quality life and I have no plans of mucking it up. My wife and kids noticed such a great improvement in my mood also as there is nothing worse than constant pain and misery.
Good luck, It is scary to think about - but there are some good surgeons and I was blessed to have two of them.
