anyone read any old, out-of-print trapping books they can recommend? Looking for something new to me. Methods or just trapline stories are all good. PLEASE- no A R Harding recommendations! those are just awful books!

Hoof beats of a wolfer, while not out of date,is a classic.Much of it is methods, but O'Gorman adds a lot of trapline history with some of its charactors, their methods and their catches.

Are you looking for method books or more of a journal type history book

From Prairie to tundra by Joe Robinson 1991. Tells of his travel at 15years old dog sledding trapping into northern Manitoba following his dad each winter. La Pas to Thompson area. He went into the managing of the Saskram marshes 2,000,000 $ of rats taken out of there in the 1930's , on to making the Register trap lines in Manitoba. Extensive writing of poisoning of artic wolves that were following the barrens ground caribau . He was one of my archaeological mentors in the early days.

Either are fine. I do prefer journal/autobiography type books. Would like to find jonny Ehn and delmar kramer's books as well.

Both good books.
For method books out of print, just got Calvin Cobb's book on snaring. Real good.
If you have not read Johnny Thorpe's 50 years a treasurer hunter, I liked that.d
Maior Boddicker wrote a small piece of a great book about an old wolfer but I would have to look that title up. Got it somewhere.
Morris Fenner wrote a good book not too long ago about some trapping adventures.
Not sure if you can find Wayne Negus's old book but that was a great one.

Wanting to read old out of print books is a fun thing to do if you can find them and then buy them, I opted for reading pre 1930 Hunter Trader Trapper, Fur Nes and Fur Fish Games. I started reading them back in the 70's and slowly built up quite a collection which I then sold, I still collect them and read tam and you can still find them, the authors back then wrote entirely differently than today and they may satisfy your need the adventure of the wilderness or trapping experience in a less troubled world. The ads were alway fun and you can get quite an education on antique sporting/outdoor material. As far as whats been referenced above, you cannot go wrong with Traplines West and Morris Fenners book, Neil Olson wrote a good one also: very entertaining. God Luck and enjoy. Every collector should have a copy of Hoof Beats, it is a bench mark in research, history and extremely well written, i keep a dog eared copy to read and one put back in mint shape.

If you have a kindle or nook , lots of online resources that let you read various old books not commonly found. One site in particular I have has old archery texts that are over 500 years old.

A lot of universities have them archived for download. Wyoming and Montana schools have lots of journals available that profile early exploration, hunting and trapping. Well worth reads.

The old Foxfire series is a great read , too.
