He was behind and made a very small bet that meant she had to not get the final question. He wouldn’t have normally bet that dumb. He wanted to go home! She was ahead going into final Jeopardy. Even if he would’ve bet everything he had he couldn’t have caught her had they both answered correctly. His bet was designed to at least beat the third-place guy and come in second b if she bet big and answered correctly, which she almost had to do. If she’d have missed the Final Jeopardy question he would’ve beaten her and third-place guy. It was a great strategy but she answered the final Jeopardy question and there was nothing he could do about that because he didn’t have enough money to beat her.
Eh...wot?

How many weeks was he on ? I would think that taping all those shows would start to wear on a person.

From the article on ESPN...
Holzhauer wagered $1,399, enough to win if Boettcher misfired and hold off Sexton if he doubled up. Boettcher wagered $20,000 to win comfortably. Even if Holzhauer had wagered it all, he would have lost by $1.
"I was a little shook during Double Jeopardy," Holzhauer wrote in an email, "because I was playing from behind and constantly getting beaten on the buzzer by Emma. By the time Final Jeopardy rolled around, I knew I could only win if Emma answered incorrectly. It felt like needing a team to miss a last-second field goal. She didn't miss, but I was still proud of my performance the whole way. I gave her a high five and smiled at how far I'd come."

Basically he knew Emma needed to answer incorrectly for him to win, so he bet enough to put him over the top, yet not enough to drop below the amount of the 3rd place player if he doubled up.

Exactly what I've been trying to say above. He bet smart and played to win to the very end. Why on earth would anybody think the guy would just throw an opportunity like that away?
