I don't know about up there in Americas stocking cap but down here there are plenty of street legal kit cars already.

nope thinking it would ship in fewer parts , add the engine and transmission as a modular bolt in unit , drive shaft , brakes , bed , and bumpers.

there are a lot of stupid people out there who may or may not ever attempt this , and I may just live in a very different place , but half my neighbors have done some sort of major build in their garage. be it tractor , truck , or car.

besides , I see enough tie rod ends break and cars go in the ditch or worse because of sealed grease Zert free tie rod ends , I think it is safer to let them put in the tie rod end and take it over to the local shop for a front end alignment than have zert less tie rod ends especially if as part of the manual all the right camber , castor, and toe adjustments are easily available.

Nice thing about a kit is you can make any changes you want as you put it together. Heck of a lot easier than getting something that is already built and having to take it all apart and try to fabricate something to do what you want. Know plenty of people that have built vehicles from the ground up and I would say they are as safe and as reliable as anything that comes down an assembly line.

My first truck was a kit truck!

Frame and body was 1936 Plymouth.

Engine was 1956 Dodge Red Ram Hemi

Transmission was 1952 Oldsmobile

Rear axel/diff. (one only...two wheel drive) was also Olds. don't offhand remember year or ratio.

Based on what you are looking for you could start with something like what I drove not so many years ago. 1984 1 ton GMC dually. Full size crew cab, eight foot box. 454 Auto,4wd. Yeah, power locks and windows, but, that's where your kit kicks in.

Same as T-Rex find several of the same models and build the best one you can! I had one with a rusted out frame so I found a frame in ID and had it U-Shipped to me. Set that frame infront of my steel building and made one truck out of 3 trucks. Rebuilt engine, trans, Brakes, suspension and anything I could find on closeout to replace on it. Put about $5,000 into it saved on the high insurance and new truck payments it was a daily driver until I got the new Toy but I still use it for trapping.

finding one common truck and rebuilding them has made sense , and with southern states who don't get the rust we do in the north I think it can continue for while longer. but the issues becomes when half the darn truck is plastic that can't be replaced , and the 7 on board computers , aluminum block engines where even changing spark plugs can be a gamble on will the threads hold or rip out. this is going to get harder and harder. a well as the good designs being depleted by those rebuilding them.

you also start running into the problems that certain models were only made unchanged for a short number of years and all that are made is all that there are , just about the time you find a truck that can be had for reasonable cost and rebuilt a bunch of others are figuring it out and the parts dry up in a hurry making rebuild less sustainable.

yes starting with something that stayed the same for a lot of years mid 80s chevy or ford would be ideal but at some point frames will be a depleted resource , better to take the frame dimensions and weld up new tube steel frames that fit the body attachment points of the range of years use old or new manufacture parts that fit the original.

beyond that not necessarily picking just a remake of an old truck or a combination of old trucks but having a one stop shop for all the parts rather than trying to explain to the local part guy that you have a 84 transmission with a 94 rear end and 89 engine in a 88 body have the kit be if not the best of the options , after market upgrades all available form the web site to order parts.

A lot can be done if you find the right guy to do the work, them chain saw sounding cars have some great mods done to then but that's beyond me, I'll stick to a truck with a carb and drive shaft!

I got a local junkyard that has late model vehicles in it. Like 6-8 months after a car company comes out with a new model.

WOW! Definitely not the kind of thinking that made America great! I'm glad there wasn't more of this surrounding Henry Ford, the Dodge brothers and Wilbur and Orville.

A kit would be made up of components to put together not a barrel of parts (figure it out for yourself parts barrel) then a final inspection by a certified mechanic would be in order. People build hand gliders, parasails and dune buggies all of the time.

Exactly! I would like to think that there are is enough freedom left in this country that you could fabricate a vehicle! Get it inspected and drive it.

A man should know his limitations. If a car is bought and sold on a rebuilt title they must pass a state inspection. Why not the same for a kit car or truck?
