Couple more. Group shot of when camp was full. Mom and dad. Looking out the old window. That door was on my dads old camp that I grew up hunting geese at. I took it when I built my place.

Hi Allen. Our geese hunt really is a trip to look forward to each spring. I didn’t get any banded birds this year but I have about 60 or so bands in the warehouses and cabins. We’ve shot banded swans before too. Snow geese and swans sometimes have big plastic bands on their neck too. The snow goose neck bands are black so I’m always watching when the snows are coming in for landing.

I’ve been looking at geese hunting pictures and videos steady this past week wishing I could go back to these conditions even for a day or two. I think that what makes certain times of year so special is that limited window where things are just perfect. At some point in February I know my trapping season is coming to an end and depending on how the year went I kind of look forward to hanging the traps and calling it a season. That’s not the case with spring geese hunting. I wish I could do this every day. So anyways I found this picture on my sisters FB showing what I consider near perfection in my hunting year. Heading to the blinds for the day with me and Bobby pulling my brother in law Raymond along with Morgan Reese Rylan and Kullen.

I like the pic of the muskrats myself. That's a nice batch of rats, slightly different colored on the bellies than what we have here though.

I think the bellies are paler, but not sure, lol. The rats are a lighter color for sure.

Les- The pic of 22 rats above was my first short evening hunt. Those were heavy skinned and only two had small bites. The next trip I got more but they were already fighting in the two days between those trips. Some are still wet in the pics but a good brushing and a sharp snap of the finished pelt gets them clean. They do have pale bellies. It seems different parts of the delta have variations on color. I was hunting clear wAter systems for all the rats in the pictures that might have something to do with the bellies. I was happy to get a couple hunts in but I would’ve liked a few more all nighters to really get a pile of rats. Too bad spring turned to summer so quickly again.

My dad bought the 22 in 1982 as part of a deal at S.I.R long before Cabela’s bought them out. I was born the year later. It’s a Remington 572 field master and the other gun was a model 870 sportsman with 30” barrel. I’ve been shooting it all my life and without a doubt it’s killed at least triple the number of animals of all my other guns combined mostly big number trips like rats and bunnies but it’s also killed 35-40 wolves and half that number of wolverine. I’ve used it on everything here Up to caribou. It’s not going to win any awards for its looks but it’ll pick off anything in range in the right hands. I grew up with unlimited 22 ammo so I shot it a lot. You have to tilt your right wrist just a little for the sights to line up just right.

Interesting. In 1977 when I was 14 I bought a Ruger 10/22. I put thousands of rounds through it. It doesn't seem to be quite as accurate as it was when I was a kid, on the other hand, I might not be as steady either. I know I cant see as well, but it is scoped. I'm not gonna say I've shot a beaver or a rat with it, as that's not legal here, lol.
I've head shot a pile of hares and grouse with it though.
