Looks like a shellcracker Really what makes you think that's a shell cracker / red ear ? Do you see the "red" ear anywhere?.

Andy's Fish Farm list his hybrid bluegills of being able to obtain a 4 lb. wt., with 1.5-2 lb. averages... certainly not a wild one but it shows what genetics and optimum conditions can produce.

LOL Art, if'n you caught that one out of that river there would be skid marks from your boots on that muddy shore. Those are some nice fish guys, I think a bluegill, pound for pound puts up as good of fight as any fish. Zim If'n he'd of caught one that size out of that river, there would have been more skid marks than just from his boots!

I've caught a couple 10 inchers. I have no idea what they would have weighed. I'm guessing close to a pound.

the state record sunfish in VA is 4 lbs 12 oz. prior to that, I saw the previous record caught at 4.5 lbs. it was a monsterdly looking thing, and was 99% sure a bluegill, proper. biggest I caught was a 14" redear, never weighed it, just ate it and shared with 8 other people. it was more than enough for all of us

Hate to think of the postage it would have costs to send to kin in Kentucky.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

When I was stationed in San Diego I used to fly fish in a small lake called Upper Otay Lake, located on the outskirts of Chula Vista, California. It didn't look like much, only 20 acres or so, but I quickly discovered it was a great place to catch some really nice bluegills. Catch and release only. No boats allowed, so I fished it with a float tube. I never measured or weighed anything I caught from the lake, but caught many hogs from there. Best place I have ever fished for large bluegills. Haven't fished it since 2009, so I have no idea how it fishes these days.

Look up The Kinfisher Society, their lake has some giant bluegills in it. It's expensive to fish there and its catch and release.
