Thanks for the tips loose goose. Glad I'm not the only one out there that hates to see good meat wasted. Years ago, the day after I'd left the military and before I had a new job lined up, I bounced 2 ruffed grouse off my windshield. We picked them up had them for dinner. My daughter said "see Dad, it'll all work out." She was right, it has!

Now what would be the fun in that? It's no fun picking up animals off the road if it wasn't illegal! Lol

You can use the same recipe for regular possum stew for roadkill possum stew, you just have to adjust the number of possums according to damage!

They are thinking of road kill, not what you hit, but what a semi would hit or another vehicle, not your own when it comes to big game.Hit a moose or an elk and chances are the driver would be in the hospital as they are solid animals and moose a pick up would drive under and smash the windshield.

For those who thought roadkill was legal, road kill are game animals, and unless you have a license or have an exemption from a conservation officer in some states, being caught with an animal is the same as poaching. Changing the law is welcome to stop the waste. It also means those mashed deer can be picked up for dog and cat food, and for trapping bait stations.

It's not always big game, but squirrels, pheasants and turkeys.

As long as the season Is open here In WI you can pick up road kills. And I'm pretty sure If It's a deer you just have to call the hot line and you can pick It up. weather you hit It or someone else hit It.
Most road kill isn't worth skinning let alone eating It. I think I'll pass.

If you hit a deer here, call the law and they come and fill out an accident report for you if there was vehicle damage,,and they also let you keep the deer if you want it.

There's the Road Kill Grill in Bonner's Ferry, ID

I picked up a doe on the side of the road on the 4th of July. The non-edible parts will be used for wolf bait stations.

we have been eating roadkill for years.

in the past you had to get a sheriff deputy to tag said deer , bear , or turkey. a real pain when your on your way to work.

in 2016 legislation was passed to create a roadkill hotline , you must call in your roadkill pickup deer .

my wife however has house road kill rules

1 it must be below freezing outside.

2 you must see it die or talk to the person who hit it.

I cheat a little on 2 if I can determine time of death like I drove one way on a road and returned 30 minutes later and it was there.

loosegoose is right if you get a nice neck head hit no blood anywhere but the nose and mouth they are likely less damaged then when shot.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Up until not too long ago there was a waiting list for car accident deer. We let you keep them year round now with a roadkill tag. I had to butcher one a few years back because I didn’t get out to hunt due to working 3 jobs a young buck hit unjust the head. Best meat I had ina while too.

Illinois won't let you claim unless you're a resident. They would rather pay for disposal than let a non resident take it. Morons.

It’s been many years ago, actually about 20, but my wife and I finally had a night out to ourselves and drove to town to eat. We wasn’t gone but maybe 45 minutes and on our return home noticed a deer on the side on the road that wasn’t there when we came by the first time. I looked at the wife and said I see sausage!! She agreed and helped me load her up, lol. She still rags on me about how I “made” her load up a deer on a freezing night while wearing a dress and heels.
