So your saying I’ll probably run into other hunters? What are my chances of getting one.

Moose will taste better than the hunters.

Another question, do you have to worry about bears, what’s the best way to avoid or keep out of camp.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Keep a clean camp !! There is always the chance of a bear wandering into camp but it is not something to worry about. If it happens you can just deal with it. Don't let worrying about that ruin your trip. They will usually try to avoid you at all costs. Just never allow them to find a meal !!

I concur. Too many people on the little ground that isn’t locked up by liberal feds. Geographically the Kenai Peninsula is nice, if you could get to the other 80% of it without getting strip-searched by an overzealous Fed.

Re: OP: Like others said, fly in to get past the crowds. Be prepared for bears, keep a clean camp and be vigilant. Use any heavy 30 caliber like White said, with good bullets, and make sure you can shoot it well. You don’t have to be a long-range sniper, but you want to be quick and accurate in your comfort range. Pack extra food and tarps. Don’t shoot a moose in the water. Keep us posted.

Thanks guys. Correct me if I'm wrong but on the AK website 13d is nonresident only area and says only 25 tags were awarded. That doesn't quite seem right. I think k I'll just use my 30 06. Is it leagal to build campfires or is that a no.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

I can't answer your first question. I don't see a breakdown in the regs for 13d. Your permit is appears to be for all of unit 13....according to my reg book. That could be wrong. I don't see any mention of how many non-resident tags were issued.

Fires are no problem. Fire wood might be a problem in some of that unit.

That will serve you well. I usually carried a .300 Win Mag if I was hunting mixed game. I had a couple of .458s and a .375 if I was chasing strictly big stuff.

30-06 has dropped a lot of moose. Can’t do a whole lot better.

Thanks for all your help guys. Just a little update, I’ve been hitting the gym every other day, lost 20 lbs and feel a lot better. Spent way more than I expected on gear, which I’m still not sure what I really need. Only 5 weeks away and don’t even know if I’m prepared for what’s coming. Not sure what my chances are of getting one but we’re giving it everything we got. The experience will be worth it. Any more tip will be appreciated.

How do you plan to access your hunting area?

Don't shoot a moose very far from your air pickup.

Learn how to call. Learn the cow call and bull grunt, at least.

Good luck! Give me a shout when you head up and if I’m in town, I can help you out with any last minute problems - I live in Palmer.

Hunted the Alaskan Peninsula with Brent Jones of AAA Outfitters. Lots of bear and salmon. Very enjoyable. The scale of the area confused my senses at first. Glassing mountainsides at first was eye opening as what I was looking for was much smaller than I expected having never been in an area like that. Pursuit of an animal may take a day to get to where you saw it initially.

I know nothing about the unit your in but we came from the lower 48 last year and hunted moose. Not to scare you but I tell this to everyone that ask me about going moose hunting, its not for everyone. Its hard work with tough conditions and its hard work. If you have a good work ethic and positive attitude you will be just fine. The area we were in it rained most days and even when it didn't rain the alder brush was still usually damp so buy good rain gear. That's all I wore besides my long base layers. I had first lite raingear and my buddies had sitka. They all did great. One of them skimped on the rain pants and went with cabelas brand and wished he hadn't. Alaska isn't the place to go cheap on gear. When your flown in a few hundred miles from anything your life might depend on it. I'm pretty sure there's not a single square foot of ground that is flat and its like walking on a sponge all the time. Makes pitching a tent interesting but then again its like a bean bag chair when you sit on it. Somedays it was around sixty and some nights were below freezing. A good tent to keep you dry and a good sleeping bag to keep you warm at night will make things more pleasant. Boots with good support and that will stay dry are a must. If the temps are warm you will look forward to the light drizzly rain to keep the black flies at bay. I learned quickly that your better off doing your business out in the open because if your tucked back into the alders they will bite you in places you do not want to be bitten. I am truly not trying to discourage you just trying to help make it a great experience. Learn to call and call close to camp. The shorter the distance you have to pack them the better and know how to break them down. It usually took the three of us two hours to break them down and nine trips to pack them out. Our furthest pack out was a little over a half mile. Be very patient when calling because they will come but it may take two days before there in the mood to head your way. They can hear you from a long ways away. We called to bulls two miles away and watched them look our way but they just weren't interested that day. Colder weather helps. We had a sat phone and called our outfitter to come get a moose once we had it back to camp. Weather dictates if they can get into you that day so be prepared to tend to your meat for a day or two. Alaska Airlines is the cheapest route to fly meat, horns and cape home. We paid $75 a piece for excess baggage up to a hundred pounds. Our meat was in plastic totes and we had about 95lbs per tote. Just make sure you have it frozen before you fly out. I could ramble on but hope some of this helps. We had an awesome time because we all had the right mindset. Even if one guy in the group doesn't have that mindset it can make for a rough trip for everyone. Good luck with your hunt and I'm more then happy to answer anymore questions you might have.

Thanks Tracer, this is all the info I was given from my friend that lives up there. There will be two of us, and we did NOT skimp on anything. Looking forward to this trip, just hope we’re in good enough shape for it.
