today. They are going to do a “plan” on the property.

Can someone tell me what that entails?

First how big is the property and how long has it been since the timber was cut?

What he said.

I don’t know, but I can send you to my good friend Kyle who works for forestry.

Who is John Galt?

You don't rise to the occasion, you fall to the level of your training.

Based on what you told them you would like to manage it for, they will make recommendations on timber harvests, possible RX burning, etc.

I have nothing clever to put here.

They should have talked with you enough to get a good basic idea of what your management objectives are. They will then take a look at how productive your property is and what potential it has that’s not being utilized. They will develop a management plan to align your objectives and their professional knowledge to improve your property. They will also most likely put a bit more emphasis on water quality issues. The practices they recommend will possibly come with some opportunity for some sort of cost share program offered through the Farm Service Agency or some other government program. If you don’t understand or agree with all the aspects of the management plan discuss it with them and have them explain it thoroughly. Remember this is a tool to help you manage your property to meet your objectives.

Depends on your goals. There could be several plans. Also any plan must have flexibility because a decision made today has a thirty year outcome. Alot can happen in thirty years.
Folks thought grand dad was crazy planting pine trees in his corn fields in 1954. Dad bought a house and forty acres with those trees. He replanted of course but by then so was everyone else. As those trees grew cotton fields and cow pastures all across the state were getting planted in pine. Now we're behind the eight ball wondering why we can't move pine at a price we want.
Heck, I'm seeing stuff being taken out of pine and put back into row cropping and pasture.

We're even considering planting the worst weed possible in pine plantations, sweet gum, as the weed now brings more than the pine. Go figure.

If you are planning to manage it like the fox habitat you trap, a can of gas and a match is the only management plan you need! grin

Well let me tell you what "Plan" from a forest consulting firm means in Virginia. "We want to clear cut everything that you have." Then you will come back and let them know that you want to manage for wildlife. They will then say, "OK", then when you are not around, they will clear cut it anyway. If they do leave a few spindly wildlife trees, they will destroy the root systems with heavy equipment, and the trees will not make it very long.

2X The "plan" should be a road map for your short and long term goals. You have to tell them what you want.

if it doesn't include an inventory of what's there now in the various management units (assuming a large enough acreage) and a list of your ownership objectives, it's not a true management plan.

the idea is:

know what you currently have

know your objectives

and then develop a plan to reach your objectives
