Ok all of you knowledgeable trapper type folks, here's a question for you. I recently purchased some traps that have a montgomery style dogless trigger system on them. I've checked the pan tension on them and they bottom out the tester so they would be 5+lbs. They have been dipped in speed dip. I'd like to lower that to closer to 3 lbs because of the fox and cats in my area, but not sure if it can be done. I was wondering about waxing or maybe dipping in full Metal jacket. I've heard that may lower it quite a little. Any ideas? ?

Very careful shortening of the notch with a file is expected with the montgomery system.

Take a file and change the angle of the notch and shorten notch so it engages out at the end. So it's either set or goes off no creep in other words.
Post a pic of notch on pan be a help

I have a few original old montys that i bought that are done that way so I see what you are both saying. I was kinda hoping to avoid that though. The montys were rather touchy.. Lol. I was just thinking wax or fmj might lower it just enough. But I will break out the file if need be...lol

I'm pretty green to trap mods and don't have any dogless traps so no help here, but welcome to Trapperman! Pull up a seat and stay a while.

Try a piece of wax on the jaw where it contacts the latch. It DOES make a difference. You may need to touch that up after a catch. Worn and rusted Monty's were notorious finger bitters. Don't remeber any of mine being more then 3 lbs though.

Thanks for the welcome Eric!
Drifter, I think I'll try that, if it works I might ditch my speed dip and go to boiling and waxing. I've used speed dip for many years on my coon traps with out problems but I'm not really that impressed with it on my coyote hardware.
