I’ve been trapping for a long time. Much of it too proud to ask for help. Two years ago, though, I walked up to a local guy who has a history of taking coyotes and offered him a 100 bucks to show me what I was doing wrong. We struck a deal which included 3 hours in the spring and 7 hours in the fall. Turns out I wasn’t doing much wrong, but I learned a ton more of what could be better.
Jonesie, Newt and Morgan Bennett put on the snaring and trapping school in January at Newt’s place in Port Republic New Jersey. I’d been corresponding with Jonesie for more than a year and thought I’d like to see the real deal. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what they’d tell me but I soon learned these guys live this stuff. There was no “smoke blowing” going on. There was no “selling” of products being done either. At 68-years of age, I now kick myself for not doing this earlier.
I took pages of notes and lots of pictures. Even shot some videos of stuff I wasn’t sure I’d remember. For me, seeing is believing. Asking questions and getting answers, seeing actual line applications, being able to walk around and analyze from different angles. All of this was offered and taken in.
It’s hard to get this stuff from videos. You owe it to yourself to go out with someone and talk to them. Watch them. Ask what you think might be stupid questions, which remain stupid if you don’t ask. If professional trappers are willing to teach you things that will make you better, you’re foolish not to take advantage of it.
