It would of course depend on the quality of the gum itself but assuming it's good stuff, I would do a pound in a gallon of PGA. Then after a few months of it breaking down, I would double the volume with glycerin. If you have a good material, then that will give you two gallons of some CRAZY potent Asafoetida....

Ive never done a gallon. I do 4oz by volume at a time and for my personal use it lasts for several years. I put a about teaspoon of gum in the bottom of the jar and almost fill it with ethanol. Give it a shake whenever I think about it. After a couple weeks I add more. I keep adding a little at a time till it quits dissolving. When it quits dissolving there is a white sediment on the bottom and some of the gum is still red and sitting there in it. Stuff is potent. A teaspoon in a gallon of lure is a lot. That thin red line is undissolved gum.

can you use the powder that you buy or do you need the gum to tincture...I just so happened to have a quarter bottle of everclear 190 and an oz. of asafetida powder after the season this past Feb so I combined the 2. I shake it every week and smell it but it don't smell real strong.

It takes much more powder to achieve a strong tincture unless you use less volume of tincturing agent per batch. Gum gives a much stronger tincture if done properly.

Sounds good. I got about 30 cloves of garlic that are just sitting in the pantry drying out. Maybe I will just add that to it also. I have no reason to make it other then im just curious to see how it works. LOL

What would you say is a proper method for incorporating the powder into a bait or lure?

curious to see how it works.

That's part of the beauty to the whole process.

Slow... It would be hard for anyone to tell you exact amounts to use not knowing what else is in the base and the amount used...Gum, powder, what variety powder is in use and was the powder version cut and with what needs to be known. If you really want to know I'd put it out and let some critters tell you.

Asfoetida smell "grows". Don't keep adding till you can smell it. Will be overpowering in a few days. Add a little and wait 3-4 days then give it a sniff. Its mostly used for cooking. (hing) That rice powder is to dilute it and make it easier to cook with. Stuff is potent. Seriously just add tiny amounts at a time till you get it right.

Not a fan at all of trying to "build" or "mimic" an odor based on my sense of smell. If you really want to know what sparks the target animal you are after keep the animal involved with everything added to your bait and lure. Look for the response and note it because one ingredient or too much can damage all those good responses you were getting. As to "getting it right" it might smell right to you but look at all the bait and lures that are "proven" and have the "right" smell that are non producers for many. JMO, Keeping the animals in your area involved throughout the whole process with every addition is key.

Thank you, TDHP and Danny! I'm okay on the amounts, just the delivery system (or media) is what stumps me. The powder is the imported stuff from India.

I also would like to thank, Bob Jameson, Paul and others for their incredibly generous help to us would-be lure tinkerers. It's nice to have such experience gently guiding us from falling off a cliff. smile It makes the learning process so much more rewarding and enjoyable.

Thanks guys!
