A lot of you may be aware that the beef hide business is very depressed right now. To the point that the local slaughterhouses are burning hides because their rendering service won't take them even for free. I was wondering if anyone head contact info for someone currently buying hides. Thought I'd help out some friends.

I believe Weibke’s might still be giving a few bucks for them, or at least taking them.

Most of the stuff you see in stores is fake leather. Crap that we would be better off without! Wife brought home a dress belt awhile back, thiink she paid ten-twelve bucks for it, and after wearing it awhile, it cracks and breaks where the buckle meets the pin. WTH kinda crap is that! I did buy a good belt at a harness shop in Indiana from the Amish, and it was pricy, but it will prolly out last me!

If we buy the crap they are peddling, they will keep making it! The average idiot out there don't know the difference, so they buy that cheap crap. I don't know what the answer is, because most don't pay attention to anything but cheap!

I believe if I am not mistaken I was looking on Petska's website yesterday and they are still taking beef hides or interested in hearing about them anyways. And Lee I have a friend that is into making leather gear. He has made a few holsters for me and now a belt for me and my wife. He showed me the difference in the crap leather you are talking about and the real thing. I had no idea. My $40 belt he made me will outlast me like you said and I got to support a good friend of mine in a dying art really. Anyone can check him out if you want Bearpaw leather works is his company. I think he is on facebook and possibly a webpage as well.

Been seeing them advertised around $100 tanned, had been wondering why the price was so low.

I just talked to Greg, and he told me they cant even give them away. If you know where you saw that on the website, send me a link, I'll try to get it updated.

He's still buying Deer, and Elk hides however.

Not sure who’s buying.

Side note: I’ve been told most of my life the big packers (Tyson, Excel) averaged more off the hide than the cattleman has averaged on the cattle he’s selling.

Well, I'm in the market for some new lace up boots. These are about wore out. You better believe I'm buying leather. I've no interest in a pair of tennis shoes being marketed as boots.

I am looking through my history for yesterday or the day before on my searches to find where i read someone was buying select beef hides. I have went through the petska site and cant find it anywhere. I would have swore that's where i saw it because i was all over the site yesterday finding fur routes for my area and what not. I suspect i need to admit i should have double checked that before posting it. I don't want to get anyone led the wrong way because i am less than intelligent.

No problem.

Sometimes there are old website pages floating around out in cyber space.

Buffalo hides weren't even worth picking up last year.

Thanks for everyone's input. Guess it's a sunk ship for now. One processor had checked with the local leather shop on their supply cost this year. They said just like always 3 to 5% higher, LOL.

Hermann Oak and Wickett & Craig are the two biggest tanneries in the US. Prices have only gone up in the past 15 years...never down. Always sending out flyers about hide shortages and increasing operation costs. Might call them, but I have no idea how they source their hides.
