I’m going to be the wet blanket on this one. For years, I tried to get the #11s to set solid in dry sets and I have to admit I was a total failure. Coon found that loose dirt, dug into it and often flipped the trap out. I had no trouble with 1 1/2, 1 3/4 or 3 coilsprings for fox and coyotes. Every season I’d catch coon, almost exclusively by a hind foot. They didn’t see the packed dirt with dry dirt cover as something they wanted to mess with. But, for the life of me, I couldn’t catch coon in a dry set #11 to save my soul.

Generally they worked well in the water but I’ve done better again with 1 1/2 coils under a horizontal pipe coming out of the bank. Or a straight pocket set on a drowner.

Bob Noonan wrote an article in 1984 called, The Almost Perfect Coon Trap. He recommended the NW #11. After reading that, I accumulated 5-6 dozen #11s and they worked well for coon and mink in the water. But for dry sets, (for me) I just couldn’t connect because I couldn’t get them stabilized and the loose dirt was an invitation for digging.

Never really thought of not digging them in. Might have to give that a try.

Never too old to learn

Bed them SOLID, all I can say.
I love 11s for coon on land. 2s are almost too big in my opinion.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
