I致e seen a number of different designs for homemade earth anchors that are driven with a super stake driver. I知 about 20 stakes short and would like to make them myself. Anyone want to share how they make theirs? Pictures would be great if you have any.

I've seen some made out of hollow pipe...or tube, the size of the driver. Small nut welded on the side for the "s" hook to go thru. Make sure you weld the "s" hook shut. Not much help, but should give you an idea.

I wanna say ADC posted some, one time...but I may be wrong. Maybe, try to get ahold of him. shocked

Depends on the soil you are using them in. If soft loamy soil you can make them from 1/2" schedule80 plastic pipe. In that case just drill a hole to run cable through mid length of tube section and hammer-on a cable stop. use a driver that inserts into end of tube. If driving them in soft soil make the cable a little longer so they will still after rain further softens the soil.

I make my own. Mine are a little smaller in Dia than a super stake. I take a 1/4thinch black standard plumbers pipe and cut a blank with a 90* on one end and an angled cut on the other end. On the 90* end I weld in the pipe a piece of solid rod, about 1.25" or a little more in length. Leave a short length of it stick out . I grind the rod sticking out past my weld into a nice point. Then I weld a 1/4th in nut in the middle of the pipe. What you should have then is a copy of a super stake only smaller in dia. I like the smaller diameter stakes for our hard clay soils. If I am concerned about them pulling out I usually make them longer... maybe 1/4th or 3/8th inch longer. I have made my own super stakes for years. The black sch 40 plumbers pipe lasts, of course I do dip my chains and stakes in speed dip after every use. I use a mighty S hook welded shut to hook up the chain to the stake. The picture is of the homemade super stake on a dogless duke # 3 I made. [Linked Image]

NebrCatman, what do you drive it with? Super stake driver is a little big for it right?

Yes super stake driver is too big. I go to a bolt supply store (Fastenal) and but a hardened bolt just long enough to go into the stake and contact the rod I welded in. I usually get a bolt long enough so I can chop saw the threads off. I then weld the hex head of the bolt to a 3/8 shaft. I have hex nut welded over the end I hit with a hammer..... to help keep it from mushrooming. This set up works pretty good. Not as heavy duty as with a super stake or super stake driver. But much... way easier to drive in hard clay dirt.

Mine are similar to Neb cat man. Mine are 3 inch pieces of black pipe with a nut welded in the middle. My driver has a pointed end with a stop it goes all the way through with the point out the other side. 15-18 inchs 3/32 cable. Easy to clean out

Those are great ideas. Hern did you have someone turn that driver for you or do you have a lathe?

I already have many dozens of super stakes. What I知 hoping is to not have to carry two drivers since I知 still a little short on stakes. I was hoping to make something that would work with a super stake driver.

Thanks

I do my own welding. But the SS drivers, I had our son-in-law make them. He's a full time welder and can weld SS.
He drilled out shaft and inserted end. Then crimped end piece to shaft.
He did use a lathe to get correct fit into pipe.

If I can't get stake drove in far enough or animal pulls part of stake above ground, Chain will lay better on remake opposed to cable sticking above ground.
Other pluses- no welding & I used up alot of extra chain laying under the workbench.

I can answer that,

I can answer that. I do it because if the anchor comes up an inch to car when I set it I have chain that will pay down instead of a loop of cable which acts like a spring and messes with trap bedding.

Wish I had more time to trap....

X2 from me. Im using all cable on most of my traps this year. The couple of them i have bedded have given me this exact problem.

I知 trying a couple dozen earth anchors this year for the first time. Trying to get rid of some weight with all the rebar stakes. Thanks for the post and information.
