I heat strictly with wood in my 2600 sq ft home. I have a classic outdoor boiler that up till this year has been flawless for 24 yrs. Sprung a leak and had it repaired. Now getting nervous since my only other heat is a Vermont castings Defiant which is at one end of the house which is 66 ft long. The Defiant is only good up to about 1800 sq ft and with my high ceilings my over all sq footage is about 3200 sq ft. Looked at standalone propane heaters at Northern tool that might help in an emergency. They have radiant and convection type. Which one would be better ? I assume I want to heat the area vs objects so possibly convection ? pros and cons needed.

Ventless versions put a lot of moisture in the air, perhaps offset with the backup wood stove.

you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!

I have the 30 000 btu mr heater radiant in our house roughly 1800 sq foot. It really puts out the heat have not noticed a problem with moisture build up. I had to move the thermocouple a little closer to the flame on the lowest heat setting took a long time to cycle off. That was tweak from their customer service otherthan that its been trouble free. It got a lot of use last winter when our old base board heat boiler start to show it backside.

Well I am just trying to look for a backup system should my wood boiler poop out during the winter. Did not know what to get---convection type or radiant type.

My uncle had the convection and it seemed to do fine also not sure which one is more efficient on gas. One thing I like about either one if you loose power you still have a source of heat.
When I lived in Decatur IL we had a ice storm I was without power for 3 weeks i wished i had one then. Had a herosene heater but a hour drive to stock up on fuel.
For short term power loss I have a 1800 watt gen to run a to fan the heat around for anything long term i have a bigger gen to run freezers and fridge.
