Trapping season in my part of N.H. starts November 1. I took off work yesterday to go set a few traps with my 10 year old son who recently completed Trapper Education. We put out a couple of canine sets, a couple of beaver sets, and a raccoon set. We were thrilled this morning to find 1 beaver and 1 raccoon. I had all my sons with me (12, 10, and 7). This is the third season for me and my 12 year old. We haven’t connected with with a fox or coyote yet but feel like this year might be the year. We’ve seen them tip toe around our traps on the trail camera. It was great to get out with the kids and then put them to work on those critters when we got home.

The boys and I hit a milestone tonight. We connected with our first canine. We used a 1.75. I’m not sure what you’d call the set. We set it on top of a small knoll in a field on an animal trail. We rubbed some canine bait on a big turkey feather and stuck it in the brush on the knoll. Got a gray fox. When skinning it it had holes and bruising and gelatinous blood all down its back under the skin. I dispatched it with a .22 and couldn’t imagine it doing that much damage or traveling that far from the head. Made me think of the tread on finding a dead fox in the trap. This one seemed a little depressed. We reset the trap the same way and added a little coyote gland to bring in a bigger dog. We’ll see....

Great job to you and the boys! You're a fine man for getting those boys outdoors and hopefully hooked on a lifelong hobby. They certainly won't forget these memories.
