Tried the 17HMR with 25gr game point and found I was loosing to many, hit hard, dropped out of the tree, only to have them take off after hitting the ground and not recovered. Switched to the 22mag using jhp and cut down on my run offs. I use a CZ512 auto, for fast follow up shots as well as when several pop out at the same time from different holes. I did try some of the 30-33gr loads, but they tended to leave bigger holes on the exits.

We shot them with a 22 long rifle and a 12 guage with copper plated lead BB's out of a full choke.
It is what it is.

You guys who use the .22 mag getting exit holes? I assume HPs, but those exit?
I've always used my .22LR with the Winchester 40GR HPs. I've not had an issue with those personally...but many areas I can't use anything stronger than the .22 LR either. Like I said, head shots only. CCI mag hollow points. If your scope is right on and you've got a steady aim, you should have brain grooves on all your coon. No body shots, ever.

That's why ya need a buddy so they don't attack your caller lol.

Maybe a savage A17 with a reddot or a semi 12g with extended mag tube if you arent skinning them.

I'm asking about coon calling, not just shooting a coon out of a tree. If they come running out sometimes up to 7-8 at a time and moving fast? If you hunt out of a boat, they tend to tree or swim for the boat, though there is always an occasional exception. Either way, head shots guaranteed. I wouldn't waste my time walking/calling through the woods.

My experience is different than yours...but I also have it dialed in where I am shooting pennies at 40 yards meaning my shot placement is almost always in that kill zone on the head or in the heart. I rarely have one take off on me

One 'coon in the tree = a single Two 'coon in the tree = a double Three 'coon in the tree = a triple Any more than three = a Christmas tree Best night of 'coon calling was 29 'coon. We gave up early.

The joke at my buyer was he could always tell spotlighted coon by the bullet hole through the coons forearm. They put their little arm up to try to block the bright light. Jim
