Most of us deer hunters have probably heard about patterning before. Here's two pics of the same deer taken over six miles apart. A guy I once worked with posted a pic of this buck the other day and I recognized it immediately, you can see how the tips of the man beams drop off.

I know the pics are dated material but it got me to thinking about how a guy would go about narrowing down a target bucks movements when it travels these distances.

Late October. Probably peak of the rut. They expand their territory exponentially then. Only tip I can offer is to target a deer like that before the rut. His home range is relatively small before the rut.

I think you're just about right, Carl. Over the years I've seen their movement pick up quite a bit from about the fifteenth of October on. They run hard right on through November and then they tend to head toward the yards if the snow is deep enough.

I fight this every year up here in northern Maine. There aren't a lot of deer but there are some big ones. I'm always tantalized with a monster track that lines out through the countryside but I can never narrow down where he might be at any given time.

Targeting prime travel funnels close to doe bedding areas in thick cover is about as good as u can do when the breeding season is upon you

10 am to 1 pm have been surprisingly good for me in thick cover this time of year

Yes sir has it figured out , hunt the does ! Don’t kill them just stay on them , they are easy to pattern . Their is no food plot in the world that will hold big bucks , but the does will !

I had a buddy who killed a real nice deer about 4 years ago. The buck never was around till about October then left in January. The buck summer range was over 4 miles away so everyone that would get pics of him in September would wonder where he went in october.
