Anyone use sphagnum moss instead of peat moss at their sets? I attended a most interesting presentation tonight by Mosser Lee, likely America's biggest sphagnum moss business. That is quite the interesting business. Very entertaining. They've been family owned for almost 100 years. It's known as an invisible industry. Even locals know very little about it. But tonight the owner spoke quite in depth about the business and industry.

Moss is a pretty big business for some people in western Oregon and western Washington. A friend of mine picks and sells it; get between $12 and $15 per gunny sack. He can make well over $500 a day picking it.
I didn't know they source it back that direction (I assume that where you are talking about).

Sphagnum moss absorbs water very quickly that's why it's used in potted plants/ hanging baskets. I dont think you'd want to use it in a trap bed.

Its quite a bit different than what you are talking about Waggler sphagnum is a swamp plant lives about forever and is basically a tube. Looks like straw when dryed

I thought sphagnum and peat were the same thing?

I've been using Premier brand sphagnum peat moss forever with great results. It is usually dry enough to use out of the bag but I dry it anyhow. I've pulled flooded land sets out of standing water after twenty-four hours and had dry-as-a-bone peat float up.

Lug nut you are correct. What I am referring to and what Is harvested here in Wisconsin is the live form or long fiber sphagnum moss and was used in WWI to pack wounds as it has antibiotic properties and will absorb 20x its weight in liquid. Very cool plant. But yes I have used the decomposed "bog moss" sphagnum with good results although I prefer to make waxed dirt now.
