i have never seen a big spike. deer or elk. if they are a spike every year their body growth must be stunted also

They will get bigger but don’t expect them to become a 2.5 year old 8 point
Next year.

Next year.

I have seen the pictures to prove this 100% false. A ear tagged fawn was a spike his first year this year a real nice 8. I guess there is that slight possibility that there are 2 ear tagged deer around hear but pretty slim I would guess.

A deer's first set of antlers is in no way any sort of indication of what he could grow in later years. A 1.5 year old spike can be a 120" 2.5 year old, or a 180" 4.4 year old. It's been studied to death, confirmed over and over, I have no idea how this myth still has legs.

well i been trying to kill a spike that looks like got two chunks of a broom handle on his head for the last 4 years. so maybe some of em do keep the spikes.
land owner saved him last week was waiting for him to take about 20 more steps to hit one of my shooting lanes and the landowner came down to hunt the fence line i was watching. ran the spike and the doe he was chaseing off.

Some of them defiantly do I shot one several years ago that I know was at least 4yo because I had been trying to get him that long and I know it was him because of a very distinctive scar he had that made ID very easy, conversely he is also one of the biggest fattest deer I have ever taken he won the local big buck contest at a dressed weight of 247 pounds 3 oz don't know what he was eating but he had 2 or 3 inches of fat on him which helped with the weight

but like others have stated its a myth

Shot a doe this year that turned out to be a spike. It was about 40 yards away and I was sighting though a scope for a head shot. His antlers were only about 3 inches long, much shorter than his ears. I usually pass on small bucks. I wonder why this one was so inferior.

If this were true we'd only have spikes In east Tenn because over 50% of our year and half bucks are spikes

There was a buck around here for 2 years that had a very long single antler, that curved out the wrong way, on the left and 5 points on the right. It was a very large bodied deer. I guess it injured its pedicel. Maybe the older, broom handled spike damaged its pedicels.
