The scratching post set is one of my favorite Cat sets- The post in the picture was originally put in for a coyote pee post on the edge of an ag field with two trail crossings intersections. Put in with a post hole digger and angled to direct coyote foot placement, after releasing numerous bobcats from that set-cats are now all we use it for. It gets scratched heavily, I’m not sure if there’s an olfactory attraction created by the scratching but if I have a tag- I will add Feline Fix into some of the cracks in the post at chest high and it seems to increase the activity. Cats are definitely not the smartest animal in my woods and I just cover the trap pan with screen and pine needles or whatever I have around. After a catch or release that area gets sprayed up pretty well and great time to take a yote off that same set with a better prepared trap bed.
If you’re a long line cat trapper you’re not carrying a post hole digger in your arsenal but when you have 9-10 years between tags … the Devil dreams on an idle horse.

Yes, there seems to be a lot of overlap between flat sets and pee post sets. To me, the pee post is just pee, no additional lure, on a post, log, grass clump, or anything that stands out on a good location. I often use them in combination with a lured set, either dirt hole or flat. My thinking is that some shy coyote that are reluctant to commit to and work a fresh lure may be taken in the more subtle pee post.

I have observed the same as Mark, that some years they seem to be very effective and others not. It makes sense that it may have something to do with density and competition.
