In my 45 years experience as a beaver trapper he may have wised up about Backbreaker or castor in general, and then again, maybe not. I have caught a lot of beaver I missed later on, including a few that were pegged. I have also had a few that were son of a guns to catch. Carry on.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

I had the same problem with a castor-based lure; lost a beaver, he wouldn't go near a castor-based set.
If you still have open water, use a food-based lure like Woodchipper. I have caught several beaver that were castor-shy on Woodchipper.
Otherwise, you would have to use some under ice sets.

The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never let the dumbest ones lead the pack.
