Watched a show last night on the Pursuit Channel and later on Life Below Zero. Saw where some musk ox were harvested. I wondered what the meat of these animals tastes like? Is there anything similar like moose, caribou, bear, etc? Or, do they have a taste unique to anything else?

I have eaten a couple steaks,I belive, cut from the. Tenderloin or back straps. This was from a large, trophy sized bull.It was excellent and tender. What made it different than any other meat I have eaten,is that the meat had extremely fine marbling, throughout. The mabling pattern was similar to cob sebbing for lack of a better term.Thi made it taste like a very good steak that had be infused with butter.Very rich tasting and I can only imagine, not good for someone with a cholesterol problem.

A musk ox is a bucket list item I'd like to get before I can't get out hunting anymore I'm sure they are similar to buffalo meaning hard to find at first but once you do it's a easy hunt until you pull the trigger .

I remember back some time ago that the NWT (Nunavut now days) opened up an area to hunting them. The hunts were cheap...like $2000. Trouble was, it would cost way more than that to get up there and back. That and the fact that back then 2 grand was a fortune to me! I always wanted to hunt them. They are neat beasts.

On Life Below Zero, Chip Hailstone mentioned that you had to get a special permit to harvest one. He made a nice clean kill with a muzzleloader. I would guess a musk ox's shaggy fur would make a nice blanket or coat.

I've heard muskox meat is great. A threatened Musk Ox herd forms a tight defensive circle. The hunter must be very careful with the shot in this situation. Post this thread on the wilderness forum there are quite a few Alaskans with muskox experience

I've eaten musk ox a few times, always harvested by someone else. It was heavily marbled, quite unlike caribou or moose. I thought it quite delicious. A friend said it reminded him of mild pronghorn. I've never had pronghorn, so I can't confirm, but I've had enough musk ox to recommend it!

They are bovines, same family as goats

I believe they can be hunted in Greenland during much better weather conditions. Probably still expensive to do.
