My friend is building this house for his sister.
He took the picture today to show her that the ground had settled and caused her house to list a bit.
Of course she was horrified. My friend told her they would have to block up the stove and a few other things in the house to make them level but that would be okay. She about started to cry.
We then informed her it was just an optical illusion; good joke though.

I had a friend in Anchorage who had a house sink on him in the permafrost. After a great deal of hassle, I believe it was eventually condemned. It was a new house.

It was a few years back but I think it was in Amherst, NY (Buffalo area) that a whole bunch of homes and business's were sinking. They had to pump a slurry under them to stabilize them and some had to have buttresses added for stability.

First person I thought of when I saw the title.

I keep desperately hoping that one day someone will call me "Sir" without adding "please calm down" or "you're causing a scene."

Real common thing here.

The worst one I have dealt with was 9 inches lower in the SE corner than the NW corner......one year after initial construction.

No laughing matter for some folks. Good friend of mine lost a complete house to a poor build over shoddy fill. Thing was the previous owners knew it and didn't disclose. Buddy and his wife had to move out after a couple years. They recovered financially with help. Never got anything from insurance or lawsuit. Fortunately parents were able to help them a bit.

Tiltin Hilton? That used to be a reliefer dwelling in my home town. Literally had a big ol twist and lean to it from front to back.
