I’ve gotten some in the past and always sold green. This year, I’m scraping and putting up. The meat and large, obvious chunks of fat will be taken off, but what about the red membrane? I tried one last night. The shed was about 60 degrees and the fat was getting hard on the knife. Do you take off the obvious or scrape everything off on fall coyotes?

Never too old to learn

I’ve been told to leave the saddle on. I received a top lot award last year for coyotes and have never removed one

If it comes of with minimal effort do it. The fat under the saddle is the bigger issue, Sometimes it will push out with out disrupting the saddle other times the saddle and fat come off together.

If there's fat under the membrane remove it but, use care not to over-scrape the pelt and expose the hair roots. If no fat leave it.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Ive always scraped the saddle and have seen some hairs come through but never had any issue with NAFA (RIP) grading.

Like tomcat said,if no fat under the saddle leave it-it will dry fine.
If there is fat under the saddle it will be easier to remove and you can take it off.
On early caught be careful not to cut the hair roots that grow through the skin.A bone scraper or a hide rake is better than a fleshing knife for those.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

The grader does not see the over scraping as the pelt is turned fur out when he grades it. It shows up in the tanning process if serious.
