Diamond plates work really well for lapping the stones.

I've had a 3 stone Norton oil bath sharpener for 20 years, but I need to flatten my stones after years of chisel sharpening. It still works on knives.

I bought a couple Japanese water stones but didn't stick with them long enough to really get used to them.

I'd need a lot of bandaids if I owned a straight razor.

That was nice of her. Buy her one of these. She'll love you forever and you'll never have to sharpen her knives again.

Yup....DMT 325 is what I had....but over the years it lost it cutting power....Plus I figured a piece of 220 is cheaper and gets the job done.

Just don't let her use it on a knife you actually like or knives needed to do fine cutting.

I'd love to get a set of Japanese waterstones

Those pass through sharpeners tear up the edge of a knife something terrible. I would not let one near my knives. I guess they are of if you buy your cutlery at wally world in those 3 packs. But stay away from any quality knife with those things

She has a decent wheel type powered sharpener but still cant get them sharp lol. Might have to just go over and sharpen them more often for her. She is a good cook

To keep those stones nice and flat, get a dressing tool. Looks like the old diamond grit stones.

I like the old oilstones. Got the soft Arkansas and a Hard black Arkansas oilstone. The Black oilstone was from 1932.

Oh, I've got stones alright! All kinds, but not very good at using them. I can somewhat get a sharp knife, but can't keep an edge. One of the top skills every outdoorsman should know, IMHO!

Edge retention is a balance between angle of the edge, steel quality and hardness , and how clean of a job with sharpening

Sharpening on a stone is a fruitless endeavor for me. I invariably end up making the knife smaller, but not sharper.
Kind of like body work and Bondo. I keeps a adding it to the panel, and keeps a sanding it off, till the floor in covered ankle deep in dust, and the panel, she'd still warped.
Paper wheels on the bench grinder for me. I can split a hair in less than a minute.
