I've been working on these for awhile now. Theyre 1/16 oz jig heads. What's everyone's thoughts on them?

They look real nice. What is the hook size and their intended target?

They look real good. You still chasing the big browns or are you trying panfish?

They do work quite well. Had them out twice already caught over a dozen trout. I'm sure the perch and panfish will eat them with abandon

Squacks I believe they're a size 6 or so. I've tied a few on 10s as well

Sundance still chasing big browns a slight variation of this makes a wonderful streamer that the fish love. I'm hoping to chase some panfish here soon. Not many around this part of the state been too warm to freeze much around here.

Beav this is my go to pattern when the fish are being tough. The action of the rabbit is incredible.

I fished lake michigan quite a few years with light rods and jigs that I tied.
I drift fished the outflows of a nuke plant. In June the fishing was pretty fantastic fo brown trout that weighed from 4-8 pounds.
The jigs tied were larger than yours being 5/16 oz.
They were a doll fly type jig. Maribou tail, tinsel chenille body, maribou wing back to the tail tip and sparse flashabou over wing.
This jig had a lot of movement and flash. White maribou, gold tinsel chenille body and silver flashabou for the over wing was my standard jig and best producer for browns.
Sometime green and silver combos woked better
Tied on those small jig heads, these may work for you. If you like tying as I did, you will like experimenting with this pattern.

They remind me of the old "Doll Flys" there use to be about 40 years or so ago. They worked great on walleyes and bass.

Nice job!

Must be nice to eat ice cream as fast as you want and not have to worry about brain freeze.

Yea they originally were tied with a rabbit strip tail in olive for a sculpin streamer on the fly rod. I usually don't tie in flash as the majority of the time there's not much natural flash on a sculpin now I think I will start adding a little flaashabou to the tail but when you look at these in the water the flash looks out of place I think because it's suspended and the hair expands making the flash look odd. But in the river the current will keep your hair compressed and look natural with the flash. Just what I've noticed but maybe the fish will like the flash especially in the more vibrant colors

The bait fish I was imitating was alewives and a white/silvery type. They can also be fairly large and wide.
Your jigs look really good. I am sure that like all fly fisherman and tyers a lot of thought and some experimentation about colors and sizes goes into your creations
It is always satisfying to catch fish on something you created yourself.
Good luck.

Nice looking jigs. That is nice long rabbit hair. At first I thought it was Arctic fox.

I've never ice fished in my life but in the 70's in Montana I learned how deadly black marabou jigs could be on wild trout.

Go get 'em.

Pete

Yea they've definitely been a thought of mine for quite some time it truly is satisfying to catch fish on a creation of your own and to see it work when nothing else will I'm hopin one day to be able to sell them to others and share that effectiveness with fellow anglers.

I love marabou jigs for trout. Commercially tied ones I like but don't love that's where part of this pattern came from. But it looks so much better in the water than marabou. These have a marabou tail and it tends to give them a nice looking tail to tie it all together

The are like a Playboy centerfold, in nice to look at, but not much use in real life. The simple and ugly white and yellow feather jigs work here, sometimes a dark purple or black. For ice fishing, we use the tear drops, Swedes and I always like the Russian hooks, and the feather jigs were more for summer casting, working rock shores for walleyes.

As for trout, we use salmon eggs or sweet corn on a hook. Never really made a bother of making it work to catch them.,

Maybe... the only problem we had was the poor quality of the jig hooks at the time. On the Madison and the Henry's for you could hook up with a 4 or 5 pound trout anytime on a jig but those gold hooks would bend out right away.

It all started with some Missouri boys who were guides for a shop in St. Anthony. The jigs were deadly on big trout. My boss forbid us to use them on guide trips, but you know how that goes.

You have good tying technique.

Pete

Hook strength is one of the biggest issues I'll face I've got some custom poured on mustad hooks that I'll be using soon
The first day I ever fished these I caught my 3 largest browns of the year. In just a few hours of fishing i tie them in 1/8 oz heads and throw them on my 7wt fly rod their heavy and get straight to the bottom. They hold right there and don't move until you strip them. Similar to a sculpin typically on the river I fish olives and blacks but I'm excited to see how the purples and pinks work as well.
Thanks I've only recently gotten back into tying and it's a great creative outlet for me.

Yes. If you pour your own jig heads you can get better hooks.
I have shoe boxes full of fly tying material stored.
I surely doubt i could tie those #26 dries now or tie one to the end of a tippet.
