Speaking of grinners, this drivel was popsted by one of my fb "friends" (hard core libs). Figures...
It’s cold out there. Please be kind to opossums. Many of them find a cozy place to combat the cold. ( so many we see are missing parts of tails , ears , toes , due to previous frost bite ) and your garage or porch may be the only place they have , they won’t hurt anything , I promise , and shooing them out may be certain death due to lack of shelter. They are Northern America’s ONLY marsupial. THEY DON’T CARRY RABIES... And these precious souls eat fleas , ticks and other pests. Please. This holiday season. Be kind. ♥️
My friend forwarded it from someone named "Melissa Hilton"
The term "souls" is used a lot by the antis. Law Dog, mself, and a couple of others fought the antis last spring on our governor's official facebook site when SD started its "nest predation bounty" program. There was a petition going around among the antis that they were going to present to Gov Noem. I spent a few hours reading through it a couple different nights and what struck me was how many of these antis (this was a global petition, at least half or more were foreigners) believed that animals were the same as people, that killing them, especially for sport, was truly murder. Its hard to wrap my head around that but these people really believe that if I kill a possum, its the same as if I kill their grandma. What a whacked worldview!!

I donate all the opossums I catch to Wilmington College's Ohio opossum study. I just freeze them whole and drop them off when I'm down that way.
Keith What happens when they thaw out?

Keith What happens when they thaw out? I guess it depends on if the opossums dodged the bullet and are just playing possum or if they suffered a true demise. I'll try to get complete list of all the diseases and parasites they have found in Ohio opossums and post it. I do know that Bubonic Plague was one of the diseases they found. Keith

when my son was 11-12 we sold a live possum to a local fur buyer. just shook it a bit when we went in. lay it over there he says. so we did. dropped off some coons and left. i guess it took a little chasing around the shop to get it corralled again

I like to knit them little sweaters and hats for the winter months and we just hang in the fur shed and eat ticks. LOL Classic!! I think some of these antis would actually believe that and think its cute, a family that eats ticks together, stays together!!

Opossum.is underated fur. I enjoy working with it. So few people put it up and it can be difficult to find good ones. Really nice work! I think their fur is actually kind of nice. I will admit I do put them up. They are easy to skin. Fleshing them isn't hard, but you have to be very careful that you do not over-scrape them. I don't own any possum specific stretchers, but generally put them up on either a small coon board, or a fox board. They typically aren't sold for much, but I guess I just don't like wasting things. If there is a market, however slight it may be, I just feel I should attempt to sell them.
