I had gotten a Iver-Johnson .32 cal revolver years ago kinda for free as I was buying a rifle from a friend and at the last minute threw it in to sweeten the deal. It was in sad shape. Made awhile ago , poor quality thing , chrome finish peeling off in spots. Yes , chrome , not nickel. I took it over to my local gun dealer and had him look at it. He told me that the timing was off on it. In other words the cylinder did not line up to the barrel exactly. It had gotten sloppy over time/usage. He told me it was not safe to fire. Value of the gun was about $60 . To get a new cylinder and have a gunsmith properly fit it cost more than that , maybe $100. It sat in my gun safe for 10 years. Finally after all that time , there was a gun buyback near me. I had been looking and hoping for one. I took the gun there and got $100 cash for it. Nice , real nice. $100 for a useless paperweight. Cop there told me that was the 3rd Iver-Johnson they had taken in that day. Most of the stuff they took in was useless junk like mine from legal gun owners. The gun buyback was funded by a local do-gooder . They spent close to 10k buying guns back in one day. Criminals don't go to gun buyback programs , or if they do , very rare.
Hope the do-gooder feels good about ' getting guns off the street '
If you ever see a gun buyback , it is just like that. Mostly junk owned by legal gun owners. Sometimes they get something good as a widow might bring something because they don't want in the house anymore. But most decent guns are taken to a gun dealer for a better price. Why would anybody take say a Glock in good condition and go to a gun buyback to get $100 when a gun dealer would give them more ?
Most gun laws do not take guns away from criminals , they just turn law abiding people into criminals.

Cragar: I worked in a foundry for about 5 years. About twice a year the sheriff would bring a large container of mostly pistols and revolvers, some real nice one to be melted down. Most of these weapon were taken away from criminals that they arrested. They were not given up willingly. Most criminals do not carry Saturday Night Specials.

If you ever notice when there is news about a gun buyback , they will have a pic/vid that is clearly a photo op. They will show you all the nice stuff up front. But the crap is in the background.
If this is funded by tax dollars , not a good use of funds. Only helps out a select few like I did.
Funded by do-gooders , yes , bring it on. I benefited nicely.

*Only the voters can make the difference.* Glad to see the sheriff taking away guns from the bad guys. It's a good thing. But like most , why did the good stuff just get destroyed. It could have been put back into circulation by use of a FFL and sold properly with form #4473 etc. Funds could have gone to help fund the local sherriff. Win-win. Unfortunately , these things are decided by politicians who think destroying it helps. Bet the local sherriff hated to see them destroyed too. The funds gained could have been used for new bullet proof vests for his department.

Those old IJ top break Owl heads, and all the clones are famous for timing issues that shave the bullet and sling lead all over. Pretty much the poster gun for the "Sat Night Special" crowd.

Why give a gun in a gov't buy back for 100 bucks when you could get double or more in cash or trade to a criminal? Dumb gov't.
