Has anyone every tried preserving/tanning a beaver tail scale/skin with the same method as you do with a snakeskin using alcohol/glycerin??
If so what are was your experience?

Alcohol/glycerin doesn't really preserve anything. The skin can be tanned though.

Yes, that is true. Just wondering if anyone has tried it and the results from doing it with that method. Do you recommend a place that I could buy a few beaver scales?

Sorry, I don't.
And I misspoke before, I meant the mixture doesn't TAN the skin. It does preserve it for a while, though not permanently. Guess it depends on your plans for the skin. It wouldn't work for a wallet, for example.

The trick to tanning beaver tails is to slip off the black grain down to white coreum before tanning. The coreum has the scale marks in it.

Boco have you ever tried alcohol and glycerin? What your experience if so?

I have used alcohol as a pickle for small skins like squirrel and weasel to prep for a tan.
I don't believe alcohol will work on thick skins.

Anybody know what specialty leather is charging these days to chrome tan tails?

$6.50 per side.

Beaver tails take a chrome tan fairly well but the best is a vegetable tan, both leave them pliable to do leather work.
I've not found any one who has a better tan for them than Specialty Leathers in Boon Iowa at 6.50 a side

I have also tried many other types of tans on them before using Specialty, and was never able to get them soft enough needed for leather work, although they were tanned well enough to keep them.

So Specialty also does the vegetable tan?
