Just wondering what you guys do to keep your locks from freezing? Missed 5 coyotes in last couple of weeks with frozen locks.
Thanks

Stop of glycol can help, especially if you use camlocs or similar locks with moving parts. You could treat the snares with fmj or wax so snow or freezing rain won't stick to the cable so it can freeze.

Are you using cams ? That is one of the many reasons I quit those things ! A drop of glycerine on the lock might help

I'm sure others have some suggestions. I prefer the Thompson style but the present day Thompson's are pretty soft. What are you snaring ?

Try the glycerine. It should help

The slim lock type usually don't freeze, the cam locks freeze up bad with freezing rain, I have melted them with fingers, a burnzamatic torch would be good.
I wonder if silicone in the cam area might prevent it

Smell is the issue that is the biggest hurdle you can’t fix one issue and create another.

Micro lock WITH a compression spring does not freeze up. Yes I know the micro lock is considered a "relaxing" lock but with a 50lb compression spring they lock up solid. Slim locks are another that seldom freeze up but I have occasionally had them hang up in the thick neck fur,due to the little locking protrusion, and not close completely to provide a quick dispatch.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I haven't tried it but mineral oil would probably also help with the freezing problem. It is also basically odorless.

I started out using cam loc's, they have their place. I get a lot of rain, freezing rain, wet snow, and hore frost. I played around with a lot of loc's and finally settled on the slim loc. They cut through the ice on the cable pretty dang good, combined with a kill spring lethal. It is all I run now.

Should help, drip a drop in after setting or before weather hits

This is good info unless you have deer stops on your snares, in that case the micro locks with hit the stop and allow the coyote to fight longer often wearing the bur on the hole which allows them to back off and you'll have chew outs if they don't die quickly.

I prefer the black mini cam locks, less area to freeze too plus the black color heats faster if the sun hits it.

Ok thanks everyone. I’m going to get some glycerin for the snares I already have and I think I’ll try a different lock on the next 100 I build and see how it goes. I really like the cam locks but the freeze/thaw/rain/snow that we get on a regular basis really hurts the catch.

I tried glycerin last year and it didn’t work. I packed the lock with scent free petroleum jelly and worked it in and haven’t had one freeze up yet this season.
