We are expecting over 50,000 people and yes they are starting to roll in. The economic impact can't really be measured as food consumption, housing, gas and purchases of everything you can imagine happens. We embrace the visitors as our guests and we are thankful they come. We are sad to see most leave.

Wow.....50,000 that's a lot for that place. That has got to be a HUGE boost for every business in town. I'm amazed you can fit that many people there. I would not doubt some of the people who live there turn their extra rooms into accommodations for the duration. From what I saw there is not too much lodging there.

PETA is a domestic terrorist group and should be treated as such. Could not have said it better ! For sure.

If you ever have a chance to go for the festivities, do it.
A couple words of advice though.
Get your hotel room well in advance. Towns 40-50 miles away will even be booked for the weekend, or days leading up to it.
Bring clothes for any type of weather. This is PA. You never know if you're going to get -20 or +80 degrees. Heck you might get both in a 24 hour period.
It's probably going to rain at least one of the days.
Bring your walking shoes and boots.
You can take the busses up to the knob, or you can walk. Sometimes it's faster to walk up and back down.
If you want a good viewing site get up there early. By early I mean as soon as they allow you up there.
Prepare your bladder for a month or so before by drinking gallons of water then not peeing for 12-16 hours.
Bring money for all the little trinkets and food that gets sold. My friend owns a bakery and made up Punxy Phil cupcakes. She sold over 5000 cupcakes in 3 days. She also sold over $10,000 worth of hot cocoa and coffee.
Go visit the groundhog den. You'll get to see all the groundhogs they have to choose from to pull from the hole.
And the NUMBER ONE piece of advice I can give you. If you see the fellas walking around in the top hats and black trench coats. Those are the members of the inner circle. They take Phil very serious. DO NOT joke about harming that whistle pig in any way, shape, or form. They'll secret that critter away, and you may get followed around by the security. Or some little old lady will beat you senseless with her cane.

BTW , I have visited Punxsutawney, PA Not on groundhog's day. But visited just the same. I was heading west and figured out looking at the map that Punxsutawney was only 45 mins out of my way , so I made a quick side trip.
There is nothing there. This is why the town fathers years ago came up with this whole thing , just to draw attention and people to them. It has worked. They are world famous now. They have a chamber of commerce office on the main drag set up in a storefront. A big part of the storefront is a souvenir shop , everything you could ever think of groundhog related. Yep , had to buy some stuff while I was in there. They also have large fiberglass groundhogs scattered around town on the sidewalks , all painted differently by artists like some other large cities have with different animals.
Also , Punxsutawney Phil is known as ' The world's best weather prognosticator '
Prognosticator means more or less , BS artist.
It's all in fun , the town gets huge recognition for at least one day a year and money is spent there (including mine) Not bad for a town that the world would never know existed if it wasn't for making a groundhog famous. They even spawned a movie about their town, Ground Hog Day with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.
The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never let the dumbest ones lead the pack.

Andie MacDowell, hubba hubba. I just seen where Bill Murray is doing a superbowl commercial of groundhog day. A deja vue.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....
