The crabs were able to tear a hole [Linked Image]
in the poly mesh bag and pull the mink carcass out and pick it clean.

I would go as far as to say that mink make the best crab bait. If you zip tie them to the top inside of the trap, they last longer. If you lay them in the bottom of the trap, the sand fleas make short work of them.

Interesting Waggler. I used mink and otter carcasses one time as shrimp bait (Alaskan spot prawns and coontails), and vowed never to do it again. The prawns tasted like otter. Seriously. I went back to halibut and king salmon carcasses.

And you had to lick your butt ....to get that taste out of your mouth. Hopefully waggler will comment on the taste....

A long time crabber told me that they used to pull pranks on other crabbers by putting this or that in their crab pots.
He got payed back in a big way one day when the other crabber escalated by putting a road kill skunk in one of his pots.
He said that pot outproduced all of his other pots even after the skunk had been removed. They could always ID that pot, as the smell never went away.

We use to use groundhog for crayfish and turtle bait … That worked really good... at least here in Ohio.

Always heard that about mink. A buddy of mine always picks up any roadkilled porkypines when he's headed to the coast to go crabbing. He claims they are the best bait. Although he reports it takes them alittle longer to schuck the porkypine caught crabs.
