No etfs. I buy individual stock and reits that have dividends of 8-12% with an average of 10%. Prices fluctuate a little bit, but a solid 10% average return overtime adds up. Plus, when retirement comes, you can withdraw only the dividends- no principle. Thus maintaining your retirement income for an extended period of time. Its not flashy, but it works. Thanks for starting this thread - was going to say something on the IRA thread but didn't want to hijack it.

Yes basically mutual funds that are traded on the stock exchange. Charles Schwab does a lot of etfs, I really like dealing with them overall

I only use ETF's( SPY) to hedge the rest of my portfolio or to get exposure (long) to emerging markets (EEM)

I will have to admit that getting ones paycheck filed electronically to your bank and also in the mail box sure beats having to get up, shave and got to work. I can now spend more time and energy doing other stuff. I will admit that starting to work and live on my own at 14 taught me a lot about managing ones money even if it was not much. I was able to learn at 15 what many don't learn until they are 30 or so and time is money in our world.
