That’s why I put my traps in the microwave, then take out and wax. They are definitely hot!!

I'm guessing not!

Thanks for the explanation 3togo. I wasn’t sure about that and didn’t really want to come off any dumber than I already do.

Ok, to add to this debate. They say that wax takes on odor. I believe this to be true. So, if the wax burns, then it should take on a burnt smell, whether we can smell it or not. So, if the traps smell like burnt wax but I store them in a vented plastic tub in the woods for the entire off season wouldn’t the burnt smell dissipate over time and the traps take on the smell of the woods?

I’m sorta along the same thinking. I keep mine in a plastic tote with peat moss and grass clippings when storing. I use the same wax every year, just add a brick or two as needed.

How long does it take a scented candle to lose its odor. Wax holds odor very well.

Lots of people use Hobby Lobby wax, it has to stink that place smells like a french house of pleasure. The real trap wax you'd think would take on the skunk smell of the trapping supply houses (which smells much better than Hobby Lobby wink ) ... I don't know what difference any that makes lol, but it is the off-season for the most part so may as well bring it all up.

LOL! You’re killin’ me ADC. I couldn’t agree more about Hobby Lobby.

Yes Sir, even though I know nothing about candlemaking, you make a good point.

You may have lost the owner's manual to your microwave.Do you know it is dangerous to put metal in a microwave? That arcing is not a good thing. It can destroy the microwave or worse, start a fire.Add to that, the flash point of paraffin is 390 degrees so you run the risk of causing a fare up or explosion of the paraffin, itself.

I have been waxing traps for over 50 years and I would never do what you are doing and recommend that others don't either. If you insist on continuing this practice, please don't wax indoors.

The advise to check the waxe's temperature is very sound advice.I get the very best wax job by waxing on a fairly hot day in the Summer, say,in the mid 80's or more.I never wax when it is below 70 degrees.

.

For what’s its worth, I caught my first skunk this year. (Pray to God every morning before my checks I never catch another) needless to say that trap stunk to high Heavens! Just because it’s was quicker to reset and to dig up, I reset the trap. I caught a possum 2 nights later. Figured what the heck, reset the trap and 3 nights later I caught a fox. Still using that same trap, and just caught a coon on a different property 2 nights ago. If a sticking trap is bad, why is it still producing?

Regarding odors, wax does not absorb odors except in the liquid state. If it does absorb substantial odor, like scorching, airing out will not make this go away. The same goes for skunk odors,etc..Milder contact odors when the wax is in the solid state, can be aired out, rinsed off or traps can be soaked in a baking soda solution.

As long as the trap smells like the trap bed It self It should still keep on catching. Put a dirty trap In a clean trap bed and you may have dug up traps.

This is right , do not use dirty traps in new bed or any other place you will set.But the same bed you had the trap. As for wax traps . The wax I use is high temp that I have. My dad had got it from a place he had work at and the drippings , he got me and use that to wax my traps and works for me on all my foothold traps .I leave my traps in the hot wax till the trap looks like it looks just wet.and then shake alittle to take the dripping off and hang to cool ans the wax to harden . then they are done .I do dye all my footholds also before I wax them

This doesn't sound like beav. What have you done with him?

I thought Robert was resetting dirty traps in fresh sets

That scent is infused in the wax,in the liquid state (mixed in).It is part of the wax,at this point.Of course it lasts.Wax is not porous.Pour water on it.It is not a sponge.

I don't have much of a nose on me and can't say for sure, but I think wax would dissipate odor about as quickly as it picks it up.
