Where I live, it is illegal to "suspend a snare for any purpose..."
The exceptions are cable restraints or in water for beaver.
Being a curious sort and a bit (ok a lot) ADHD, I thought I'd buy some micro locks and 1/16 cable and get busy putting together some beaver snares.
Now I'm wondering if that cable is too small for open water or not?
Not planning to snare under ice as we don't have any this year, but I thought maybe I could rig up something on a drowner or maybe an in water kill pole?
I want the beaver DOA under water to avoid unwanted attention and I thought a snare might be less obvious than a 330 or a foothold.
Any thoughts would be great

Just happy to be here.

I would not have chosen 7x7. 1/16th 1x19 will do the job and much easier to handle

1x19 was out of stock at MTP when I ordered.
I had ordered a dozen MTP beaver snares for prototype/copying and they are 1x19 x 1/16
Is the 1x19 higher test dates or are you recommending because it makes a faster snare?

I tried 1/16, but both times I tried it, the beavers chewed through the snare cable.

You want 1/16 1x19 with a dmd lock. You can get them ready made from TCT.Drowning sets only.

The 1x19 makes and holds a round loop much easier than 7x7. The 7x7 is too limp IMO. But as Paul implies........you need to get them under water quickly.

Have you considered power rams ??

White, I think a RAM might be asking for trouble here as it's pretty urbanized in some areas, but something to think about for sure

Can someone give a description of an open water drowning set? Do you make a short snare and send it down a cable or rod on a lock?

Give them a long lead from deep water and use a couple well anchored tangle stakes the correct distance apart to do the job.Angle them outwards or cross them under water so they tangle up at or near bottom so they cant get air.
Same as how you use kill stake on a canine snare in long grass.
