According to the Pioneer Press, Mille Lacs County officials are warning that multiple government functions, “from business licenses to taxes to environmental regulations to perhaps southern-shore access to some of the lake’s prized walleye-fishing waters,” could be impacted by this move.

“None of this is true. We have no authority – and no intent – to impose business licenses or taxes on our non-Indian neighbors. EPA has exercised environmental jurisdiction on the reservation for many years without incident and there is no reason to expect this to change. Access to and regulation of the Mille Lacs walleye fishery also will not change,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin said that while the acknowledgment changes nothing for non-native neighbors, it has great meaning to her people.

In the 1700s, there were three villages of Sioux along the south and west Shore of Mille Lacs. They had been there anywhere from 300-1200 years depending on which historian you believe. Ojibway came from Wisconsin and killed off the Sioux and took their land. They killed every man woman and child except for 40 teenage girls which they kept alive and divided up as slaves among the warriors who showed valor in battle.

That's how the Ojibay got this land to begin with, so I wounder how they would like it if turnabout was fair play. I'll betcha not one in a thousand of the ojibway living in that area have any idea how they got the land to begin with.

And how do you know the Sioux didnt take it from the Nishnabs to begin with and the Nishnabs are just taking it back again?

While they say it changes nothing it will no doubt be precedent setting for a number of other reservation issues around the state. Great to hear nothing will change with Walleye management on Mille Lacs, since that is going so well.

He said recently that he wasn't sure if w should be hunting wolves. His reason ,pack dynamics.

That sounds more like an opinion than a lie, but don't get me wrong, I don't like his opinion either.

He also wants to provide protection to rats, weasels, and snakes.
