Hey everybody! Long story short, Ive come into a pile of old trapping stuff. By pile I mean about 3 sheds worth. Its been a quite fun going through all the old stuff cause most of it is from the 60's. Old timer that passed away who hoarded trapping equipment. Found lots of Newhouse stuff too!! Anyway, everything in these sheds are supposed to be trapping related, and thus far have been. There are three things though that for whatever reason he hoarded in bulk. I am going to try to post pictures here so you guys can look. If you know what they are, please shout!! Thanks! [Linked Image]

The first is a foot for a wooden pike pole-often used by winter beaver trappers as a feed hook to set den entrances, and other uses.
The other thing is a spring to beef up weak longspring traps.
I have no clue what the saw thingy is.

The "saws" are tooth kits. Four tabs wrap around the back of the jaw.

Boco, how are the spring pieces used to beef up springs? are they like tack welded in place?

Crimp on teeth, for smaller footholds. They were common, quite a while back.

Slide the chain to the eye, insert helper spring and slide chain back to the spring bend

Shoved into the bend of a long spring and held in with a twist of wire.

I was thinking same thing. 3 sheds of trapping stuff would be like Christmas at the North Pole.

We never welder or wired the helper springs in place. We just slipped them through the chain holder and they worked fine and remember ever losing one or having one destroyed by coon or mink. We used them mostly on #1 and #1.5. Some of the traps I used were like 50 to 60 years old and had been my grandfathers. If I remember right the helper springs cost like a quarter and a new trap was a $1.35, so was cheaper for rats and an occasional mink to just buy the helper springs. And they worked fine.

I am old enough to know all 3, but the others have the answers.

I'd have to go look at it to be sure? but I have a pike in the boat that looks close to the same as the one in your picture. I've had it for years and don't recall where I got it? probably at and auction.
