Was possibly go trap close to dam in ditch along 4 lane freeway, u can legally trap without permission in row, last fall the farmer approach whole culvert an ask if wanna trap beaver. I told him open April 15 an he say now right away like trap, not then, I set trap, 2 beaver in 2 days an left. Like do some spring beaver trapping, where I set was on roadside of natural gas line. Anyone know of buried gas line in ditch, run along ditch , close property edge, that if gas line is usally on road right way ? I don't know his name an if house across road or where, an not gonna go though bother to try catch 1-2 beaver. Dam borderline but on roadside gas line, an looks like row , where make foothold set close dam , just like make sure I ok, he say in Nov to go, might not like neighbors see me around this time year, the ditch close dam is max I want to walk "I was possibly going to trap close to a beaver dam in the ditch along a 4 lane freeway. You can legally trap without permission in the ROW (right of way) in Iowa. Last fall the farmer who owns the land asked me if I wanted to trap the beaver up the creek. I told him season is open until April 15th. He said he'd like them trapped now, right away. I didn't want to right then. I did set one trap in what I think is the ROW and caught 2 beavers in two days, then I pulled the trap. I'd like to do some beaver trapping this spring. The location I had set previously, was on the road side of a natural gas line. Does anyone know if these gas lines are in the ROW or on private ground? The gas line runs along the ditch, close to the property line and I want to make sure I'm not on his property. I don't know the farmer's name and I don't know if he lives in the house across the road. I really don't want to bother to go to all the trouble to locate him if I don't have to, to set where I set in November, for 1 or 2 beavers I may catch. I don't want to walk all the way onto his property anyway." If you can't figure out what he is asking why not just skip it and not make stupid comments. Most of us don't think you're being funny. Dave you'll be legal if you are on the road side of the gas line. ~ADC~ Thank you ADC. I don't get the joy of making fun of a fellow trapper.

All county roads are located on land that is referred to as road right -ofway. The width of the county road -of way can vary a great deal. However, the general rule of thumb is that the road right-of-way is 66 feet wide, approximately 33 feet on both sides of the center of the road.
Having this information should help you. Step off 11 big steps from the center of the road and you are at the boundary. If it is more, you are guessing. If there are power lines and you can stand under the transmission line I use that as my boundary. I have dealt with many land owners who pay taxes on the property to the middle of the road which is true. I point at my license plate and fuel tank and explain to them I also pay taxes on the same road including my right of way. LLL

I think the first beavs that coonman was talking about he wanted to wait until spring so they would be better fur and larger castor but the farmer wanted them gone sooner, so he trapped them in November. I'm assuming IA is a lot like SD for beaver season, Nov through April.
I've never liked dinking with ROWs on paved county or state highways, just more hassle in my opinion when there is 10x as much gravel road ROWs to work on with a lot less traffic. Whoever said that you can't ROW trap from an Interstate highway I believe is true but maybe that varies by state as well. The first slough that I ice-trapped mrats back in college was just off the Interstate but it was an open winter and I drove my old ex-state beast '74 Plymouth station wagon down into and back out of the ditch everyday. I was out in the slough one time and a Hypo was there checking out my car. For some reason, he never gave me a warning ticket or one of the those orange "must remove in 24 hours" stickers on the window. Maybe he had trapped rats as a poor college kid and gave me a break. I probably wouldn't cruise down into an Interstate ditch anymore, old fat men jumping ditch fences look silly...

Look forward to seeing Coonman at Iowa convention in Cherokee next fall. You are a very well known and respected trapper here in Iowa. Please keep us posted on your trapping as time goes on. You have a lot of knowledge to share. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’d enjoy putting a face to a name and having a nice iced tea with him.
