I have a old victor underspring jump. I use wondering if this would work on coyotes. If it jumps than wouldn't that possibly throw there foot out of trap? Also, it has no pan tension to it. I set it last month. Did not have no activity on the set.

I've used #3 victor jumps for coyotes. I have some #2's as well but i just dont think the #2's have enough holding power for coyotes. They make a great fox trap though. As for the #3's, when they had the original pans it was tricky since half the time i sifted dirt over them they would fire, but I still caught and held coyotes with them. Since then I put all new PIT pans on them and laminated the jaws.and they work great. Never had the pan throw the paw out. always a good catch. They are good traps if you can fix that pan tension.

PIT pans on the 3's and 4's make it a whole new ball game.I always had problems with the pan tension too,it seems after a catch the trap had to be trap smithed to work again.Recently I bought some 4's that the seller had installed PIT PANS.WOW! What a difference.

You can file a miles trigger and it'll add pan tension. Guys in OK. used a lot of jumps for coyotes due to their laws.

I had good luck with Miles triggers on some 4's.I also bent the dogs to add just a little more tension,as well.

The Miles system does work, but there's nothing like the PIT PANS.

I beat the metal together that holds the pan on to get the pan tension I want. I never remember losing a single cat or coyote in them I use 3 and 4s.

An illustration would make this simple, but to describe it would go like this;a half notch filed into the pan shank,a half notch on the end of the dog so they fit together when trap is set.Like I said,a picture would make more sense than my definition.

The best conversion for the old jumps is the old Oberto dogless conversions. Both pan tension, and dogless, in one unit.

You are talking old school and most will never have heard of this gentleman nor his dog less set up.

The nice thing with Morse Oberto's 300 and 400 setups, were that you could put them on jumps (undersprings) and longsprings. You could use them as a modification, or to repair a broken trap cross. The 300's fit #3 sized traps, and the 400's fit #4's. They were made in the late 50's through early or mid 60's, in Iron Belt, WI. I have some unused kits, I can take a picture if you want. I have them on a lot of my #14 jumps. Paws-I-Trips work well on the jumps too, and are certainly easier to find, but still have a dog. You might find some Oberto's, if you post on the trap shed? I suppose they are getting rare though, these days....... I like the dogless design on the Oberto's, but their one drawback is they are a bit prone to freezing issues, in freeze/ thaw weather, for a ground bedded trap, since the pan hinge point is on the bottom of the cross.

Here is a 300 and 400. Very simple modification for jumps, coils, or longs. Pans could be enlarged for those who wanted bigger pans. Surprised nobody has started making these again....

Good luck. I've tried the #3 jumps and hated them. Got rid of them and my only regret is not getting rid of them sooner.

Now that I think of it, that went for all the jump traps I've owned. Looked cool, set nice but that's where that ended. Catch percentage was always miserably low. Much better equipment on the market today. Sell to the antique guys and be happy you don't own them any longer.

Trapped4ever, thanks for the photos, very good. I will be making a few of those in my shop this summer to try out on some 4 US next season. I have been aware of these and Oberto for many decades but never seen these conversions in person. Wouldn't mind owning an original but should be able to make several functioning copies from your excellent photos. Thank you again, Gary.

Gary,

No problem. I think Oberto was a little ahead of his time, in promoting dogless traps, adjustable pan tension, and smaller pans. These kits are so simple, and being adjustable, work on almost all type traps. I heard or read he made other sizes, like a 200 for #2 size trap, but have never seen one, to verify if it is true. I have a small stockpile of the #300's and #400's. You might try advertising on the trap shed if you are really wanting some, as there are bound to be more laying around in trap sheds somewhere?? Let me know if you need more photos, or you can PM me, if you prefer.

Some food for thought on jump traps....

Not sure they are worth the effort and expense but some ideas never-the-less....

Trapped4ever, Thank you I may take you up on the offer if I run into any problems on the fabrication. Also will search out an original on the shed.

ADC, always good to see various modifications on traps, they spark the the thinking process! I have several #4 jumps set-up with the original 01 pit pans from when Ed first produced them. They are a great improvement over the original pans! I have some more 4's I'd like to try dogless, and like the idea of going old-school with the Oberto design. I'm pretty sure I can pull it off, even with out the originals. Thanks for the photos, Gary.

When I was young that was my dad and my uncle coyote trap. A #3 jump trap. They used them on coyotes Bobcats beavers. Some guys must been watching them set traps they didnt know it one time. They stole 34 #3 jump traps. They went out and set after that trying to catch them getting more. They never did catch them. They find out who it was . Couldn't prove it. I know they told the guys they carried Remington speedmasters and wasnt afraid to use them. They never lost a trap after that.

Never used them on coyotes. I used #1 and #1 1/2 jumps on about everything when I was a kid. I liked them I think because I could set them standing on them easier than a long spring before I was big enough to set them by hand. Make a good muskrat and mink trap as long as you know which direction they are coming from, they are kind of a directional trap though so I never liked them for blind trail sets. Since I mainly set spillways for beaver I never liked them as a beaver trap, although they work fine on a castor mound set. I had a couple #4 jumps around I used to set for beaver in places I was worried about getting traps stolen. Would rather lose one of those than my good longsprings. Caught quite a few beaver in them though. Course it helped that I was only setting places that I was worried about losing a trap if they were surefire locations. smile

Hard to see, but that's a yote in a #2 jump, about 5' of chain, nailed down with a 24" 3/8" rebar stake

I have a hydraulic press. With the large jumps I have I pressed the pinch point where the pan attaches to the trap down so there was close to no gap. By moving the pan back and forth while compressing the pinch point it was easy to get that area very snug. After that I added a Miles Trigger and when set the traps have tension and no pan movement from side to side. I did the same thing with all the 3 and 4 long spring I have also. Same result. Small critters and bird used to set these traps off but after the modifications all that stopped.
No added expense other then time.
Ted

Mr. Medvetz is a big fan of the larger jumps and he sent me lots of pictures of his when I purchased the kits from him. The PIT system greatly improves the trap and is a fairly easy install.

3 or 4 jump traps was my only beaver trap I had growing up. My dad used the #3 on coyotes when I was young. I like the #2 for muskrat sets.

I did end up putting a PIT on them. Twist link chain and crunch proof swivels too. Camo painted and they are ready to go.

What about them is that bad? I can't really attest that much cause I've barely used them.
