During December and January Cali had 5000-7000 Chinese coming in and out per day. Why after all this time does Cali only have just a over 200 deaths from CV19? That comes out to about 5 people per million. California has a population of 40 million compared to NY with 20 million. Granted the population density is greater in NY, but with twice the population (20 million more people) you would think that Cali would be a bit worse off than they are. I'm glad there not!

This question was ask buy Rush earlier in the week and i can't stop thinking about it. He had a few call in from Cali saying at the end of January first of February there whole neighborhood was sick as a dog, but tested negative for the flu. With 5000-7000 a day coming in and out from china it just doesn't make sense that they have such low infection rates. The state leaders clam it was the quick response of social distancing orders, but they only did it two days before NY. What do you think. "Herd Immunity"???

I think it is a very interesting question that should be under study right now. It's not just Cali and NY either, it's also Washington (Seattle) and NJ. There is something different going on in the NY/NJ metro area vs the metro areas in Ca and Wa and we need to know what it is. I don't think it's herd immunity because the virus has not been around long enough but that's just an opinion. The new antibody test would allow testing for immunity in population segments to make a comparison and know for sure. Actual behaviors may differ in response to the distancing orders. As we have seen, it has been a problem in NY and NJ with significant violations making the news. It could be the degree to which people use public transportation or a difference in housing or dining practices. Or any number of other things I'm not smart enough to question, but I hope it is being studied.

California, unlike NYC is not a collection of apartments. Single dwellings are far more common. It is also spread out. From the coast east about 100 miles and from Mexico north to the top of grapevine, SOCAL is all one big city. But not piled up on top each other. Oakland Sacramento San Francisco same thing. Very crowded but not in apartment buildings any where near like NYC has. In land area the 8.6 million in NYC is not that big.

Aren't the subways in NY still in use ?

I think THAT is a large part of it. I don't buy the herd immunity theory. Too early IMO

NYC has 8.6 million in 309 square miles. So 31 miles by 10 miles with 8.6 million people. Or 27,832 people per square mile. Its a wonder there is not several epidemics a year there.

Danny I’ve thought a lot all week about the difference in population density. Kansas has a death rate of over 5 per million about the same as California. We have 35 people per mile they have 254. Not saying you’re not dead on just can’t get my head around why our death rate per million matches theirs. Wouldn’t they have had much more exposure with all those Chinese coming in and out?

Just to add to the confusion, according to Wikipedia's in Japan:

"On 14 February, a married couple, both in their 60s, tested positive after returning from a ten-day vacation in Hawaii, during which the man began showing symptoms.[24][25] On 16 February, it was reported that they had used Delta Air Lines to return to Tokyo from Oahu and stayed at the Grand Waikikian.[26] Contact tracing was initiated by the airline to confirm whether anyone was infected.[26]"

According to Hawaii's of health their first identified case was on March 6

https://health.hawaii.gov/coronavirusdisease2019/what-you-should-know/background/

This timeline fits the 2 week incubation period very well. Honolulu where this couple stayed is the most heavily affected portion of the state. It also means C19 has been in Hawaii since approximately 4 Feb (assuming the Japanese tourists brought it with them).

I think ours will drop pawnee as soon as this hotcoldwetdry weather is over.

Most of ours is in KC Wichita Topeka Lawrence. The crowded part of our state. At least half our population is in those metro areas

I hope so Danny. People need to get back to work. I have also pondered your statement on the warmer weather. That could very well be the reason for lower numbers. I still lean towards most of Cali being exposed in January, but we will have to wait and see. There governor said today it will be Late April May before they peak.

I was really hoping the warm weather was going to slow it down too but I just saw a doctor on Fox who said it wasn't showing as much promise as they hoped. Some places in FL where it is bad has been hot for a while.
