After reading about making Beaver tail oil on here and Bob Jameson saying he made it indoors near wood stove I opted to give it a try. I had the jar in the garage by the heater vent pipe. Wife kept saying something smelled dead in the garage and figured it was just her being over sensitive about me putting up beaver in garage so I blew it off. Today she said it was worse and I needed to do something about it. Never has she said that when I am doing beaver put up so I figured I would check the oil. I removed the lid and was overtaken by a smell worse than a dog fart. She could smell it in the house. To save attorney fees for divorce I decided it would be wise to move the tail oil jar out to the shed in the back yard. Anyone that can make that stuff in the house and not smell it should be on a fabreeze commercial because they are definitely nose blind.

I had no odor what so ever during the couple weeks I worked my tail oil. My tails were fat and bone only. No tissue or skin. I just finished my batch yesterday. I got 32 oz. of tail oil from about a 2/3 full gallon jug of loosely filled cut pieces. The cap was loose during the rendering process. My jug had very little odor when I opened it to stir it a bit during the rendering period.

Maybe your beaver didnt have good hygiene. Our Pa beaver dont have that problem. smile

Just tell her your the man of the house and she should calm down and rethink her position, let me know how that goes for you when you feel better.

I cut the tail up into 1 inch pieces and put in Mason jar with a aerator stone in the lid like I do when making bait so it can gas off. I was very careful to remove all red meaty parts and was left with nice white fatty looking stock. I will finish it in the sun and share the results later.

The bright side is you haven’t lost your sense of smell so you can cross that off the Coronavirus check list. laugh

Did you remind her about your agreement "for better, for worse?"

I'd recommend you make an effort to smell worse on a daily basis so she gets used to that sort of thing.

Oh, trust me she is very tolerant of my trapping smells. The household joke is if you smell skunk you know Dad is home. Funny thing is she complains more about beaver than coyote.

Wish I had more time to trap....

To be taken with a grain of salt. Anybody that makes lures for a living probably don't have much olfactory left! grin
